Let’s get some things straight. Yes, I won 🥇the Double Elimination Bracket at the Houston Open. There were only two of us. And my opponent had just recently gotten her black belt and was much younger than me. I have not sparred in about a year and a half thanks to how ill I’ve been. I found this tournament less than 24 hours before it started. I entered it on a whim to challenge myself. Thanks to some kind humans, I was able to borrow gear since we only use a helmet, mouthguard, and small hand pans when competing in the Moo Duk Kwan. I was petrified having never been to an open karate tournament. I didn’t know the rules or what to expect. I ended up having an asthma attack inbetween rounds. (Which has not happened since high school.) But I did it. I did it not just scared but petrified. I was proud of my win. I’m glad I know where to improve. I met some really cool people. And I had a lot of fun. The girl by the ring with you might look scary, but she’s nervous too. It’s about what you do with your nerves that matters. I don’t know about y’all but 2024 was rough. I seriously thought I hadn’t achieved much. But putting this together made me realize that even with chronic illness, a death in my family, my ongoing battle with narcolepsy, I still got a lot done. I got married. I went to a crap ton of therapy. I got my dream dog. I trained my dog to be my service dog. I worked my tail off at my job. I kept training as best I could. I’ve never been more excited about the new year. I have more hope, new beginnings, and goals I am so excited about. Thank you so much for cheering me on and being here to watch my story.
