Let’s talk about how the city council is ignoring ADA accessibility again and is now showing every speaker from the side so those who read lips and use body language as a means to communicate can no longer fully participate in viewing. They hate the audience support so bad that they don’t care what regulations or groups they ignore. The members of city Council don’t take notes during the speeches— Half the time you can look at them and tell when they are barely listening to you: eyes glazed over, not looking at you, and sometimes not even in the room to begin with. I have only been approached and have had personal conversations with three of the alderpersons since attending & speaking city council. Our city does not care about the marginalized communities. They do not care about access to safety and protection. They do not care if your rights are being stripped away, although they have the ability to protect it. Too many of our council members have personal agendas that influence the way they vote, how they act, and who they care about. It is time to stop being complacent. I need more of you to come to these meetings and to speak. You don’t have to be a seasoned public speaker. You don’t have to be well researched. Your lived experience as a Springfield, or anywhere, citizen who has stories of neglect due to council members not caring about the community is more than enough.
