Many other attempts at a slow introduction were made over the two weeks that proceeded the events in this video. His cage was placed in front of a mirror. His cage was placed in between two other cages of squirrels. He was put in a cage with one squirrel. He was put in a cage with two squirrels. Nothing was working, and I was running out of time both for him to successfully adjust, and for his peers to be young enough to be willing to be patient with his behavior and eventually accepting of him. Within two days, he began to be comfortable. Within a week he was developing squirrellike behaviors and starting to interact with the others in a meaningful way. Eventually, all six squirrels in his cage were transferred back to his original finder for a supervised and appropriate soft release. This soft release was successfully done mid summer of 2023 and all six still return almost daily to feed at the finders squirrel feeders. Spunky, as they called him, remembers his name, and will look up when they call or come running for food, but they no longer make attempts to interact with him. He is fully, and successfully a wild squirrel, enjoying the life he was born to have.
