As I wear my new green @fabletics scrubs , I realize it’s that time of year where medical school, residency, and fellowship interviews are coming to an end. Over the holidays, applicants are thinking very deeply about where they want to be, as these decisions are in many ways career defining. So, as someone who has been in this position twice now, once for medical school, and once for residency, (and likely once again for fellowship), I would like to offer some advice. No matter what, always remember this: you want to go to a school or program that loves YOU for who YOU are. That cherishes your uniqueness. That is excited to have what you have to offer. That sees you as the diamond in the rough. You do not want to be at a program that doesn’t like or wants to change something about you. I tell everyone that asks me honestly: the program I’m at now, was not the one I initially envisioned would be in my future. However, when I look back, the signs were so obvious. My interview essentially went something along the lines of this tiktok! When I sent my love letters to my top programs, this was the only program that responded to me with gratitude. And now I’m here, I realize that there is truly no other place that I would have been this happy. All of this to say: trust your gut, everything works out for a reason, rank/attend a program that loves you as much as you love them. If you have the utmost love for a program, make that known to them!
