I do these types of floating sprints from all different distances and transitions at the start. Some of them I start with a forward somersault, back flips, or even an open turn. It’s also fun to change up the distance from the wall the swimmers are floating, so they have to work on producing speed from essentially nothing and then - carrying that speed into the wall. It also forces swimmers to adjust their stroke counts to hit the wall well too! Want to perfect your starts and turns? Your streamlines are costing you more than you think. Drag is the resistance a swimmer faces as they move through the water. The more resistance, the harder your athlete has to work to maintain speed—and that costs energy and time. Understanding how to reduce drag is critical to unlocking your swimmer’s full potential. Here are the three types of drag every coach should focus on: 1️⃣ Form/Pressure Drag: The more surface area your swimmer presents, the more resistance they face. Perfect streamlines off every start and turn are non-negotiable. 2️⃣ Friction/Viscous Drag: Water clings to the body and slows swimmers down. Tight suits, caps, and a well-aligned body position help reduce this. 3️⃣ Surface Drag: Waves create resistance, and excessive movement amplifies it. Smooth, controlled strokes are essential to cutting through the water efficiently. Every fraction of a second matters, and reducing drag can be the game-changer your swimmers need.
