Replying to @hebspanteach was very excited to talk about this, so here are my initial thoughts. I know you meant for this to be a joke, but I actually think discussing the symbolism behind their modes of transportation is really interesting. I think some people expect me to be upset by negative comments about Glinda for some reason, but I actually care much more about symbolism and literary analysis than I do about these characters. #fyp #wicked #media #analysis #tiktokpartner #wizardofoz #greenscreen #medialiteracy #glinda #interpretation #symbolism
Did you know that the Sea Goat was sometimes depicted nestled inside a seashell?  One of the things I find interesting is that even when portrayed within a shell, the lower half keeps its aquatic essence like common depictions of the Sea Goat. Capricorn is often shown with a distinctive curl in its tail, but when inside of a seashell, this curling or spiral effect is brilliantly retained with the design of the shell itself. Symbolically, shells are a study unto themselves. They’re often associated with goddesses and their spiral design speaks to what's sometimes referred to as the "curves of life". But as much as they're associated with generative properties, they've also been strongly tied to death, the underworld and have been used for funerary purposes. I find these connections more than fitting for the sign associated with Saturn. Naturally, shells also correspond with vessel and protection symbolism due to their shape and because they house some crustaceans and mollusks.  There’s definitely a charm with these versions of Capricorn. What do you think? I’d love to know. :: Book tarot sessions by text 503.893.4606, DM or through my site SymbolicStudies.com. Based on my research, this is the earliest known depiction of Capricorn as the Sea Goat. This illustration is based on a relief that features Enki (AKA Ea), the Sumerian god of water, seated on their throne. At Enki's feet, you'll see the Goatfish which is a reference to the constellation we know today as Capricorn. Fittingly, Enki is closely associated with Aquarius, the sign that follows the Sea Goat. Gavin White, author of Babylonian Star Lore, writes: "The close affinity between Enki and the Goatfish is manifest on numerous entitlement  stones where the Goatfish is often combined with other astral symbols associated with him, such as the turtle or the ram-headed staff."  :: Book tarot sessions by text 503.893.4606, DM or through my site SymbolicStudies.com. The "sea" goat is also the "see" goat. In antique bestiaries, the goat's vision is often emphasized, highlighting its symbolic connection to the eye. Specifically, they’ve been acknowledged for having keen eyesight from great heights, which is their preferred vantage point. Interestingly, this association between goats and their eyesight has been preserved with symbolism connected to Capricorn. For instance, the Hebrew letter associated with The Devil card (ruled by Capricorn) is ayin and means "eye". This connection is also seen in many classic versions of The Devil card, where the figure is sometimes depicted with multiple eyes. Occasionally, The Devil's third eye is curiously highlighted, or in the case of the Thoth Deck, the goat is shown with one. Among its many interpretations, The Devil card relates to inner vision, second sight and the revealing nature of perception. As always, I'd love to know what you think. Original art by Vince Locke.  :: Book tarot sessions by text 503.893.4606, DM or through my site SymbolicStudies.com. Over the years, I’ve noticed variations of Capricorn with a knot in its tail. Knots can represent many things but generally symbolize the power to bind and loose. Capricorn’s tail relates to its watery nature which is fitting because tying a good knot is a skillset sailors and fisherman are known for. Related to this, I think it’s interesting that two of Capricorn’s alternative names were once “The Double Ship” and “Ship of The Rope”. I also find it fascinating that in India, knots traditionally correspond to gods of death which correlates with Saturns rulership of the sign. As an earth sign that rules The Devil card, I found the following quote about knot symbolism more than appropriate: “On a spiritual level, loosening bonds means freeing oneself from earthly attachments in order to live upon a higher plane”. There’s plenty more to unpack regarding the knot and how it might relate to Capricorn but that’ll do for now. As always I’d love to know what you think. :: Book tarot sessions by text 503.893.4606, DM or through my site SymbolicStudies.com. It’s also worth noting that “pan” in several languages means “bread” which is fitting given Pan’s pastoral connections and the golden field of wheat.  Appropriately, “pan” also means “mister”, “master” or “lord” in a few languages as well. This brings to mind the idea of The Devil as “The Dark Lord” whose card corresponds with Capricorn. In the Greek pantheon, The Sea Goat has mythological roots that are often traced back to Pan himself. As always, I’d love to know what you think. The symbolic connection between Capricorn and the knees relates to mobility, structure and support. The knees, essential for bearing the body's weight, reflect Capricorn’s relationship with the heaviness of Saturn. Sometimes, Capricorns can feel burdened with carrying the "weight of the world". Our knees have been associated with surrender or respect as well, kneeling can represent devotion or recognition of a higher power. To "bend the knee" is to show reverence, allegiance or submission. I also think it’s interesting that Saturn’s association with restriction or limitation is linked with putting a covering or “cap” on something, not unlike the knee-cap which protects the knee joint. For what it’s worth, Capricorn also starts with cap. The squatting position, which I've written about in connection to Capricorn, is also made possible because of the knees. I’m also reminded of the knees crucial role in climbing which can be seen as related to the climbing prowess of the goat. At some point, I was struck by the similarities between paintings of Chronos (Father Time) clipping the wings of Cupid and how similar it looked to a frightened child sitting on Santa’s lap.  Both figures are bearded, sitting down and relate to Saturn. While Santa doesn’t have wings like Chronos he still “flies” with the help of his reindeer. Santa is also associated with nighttime, particularly midnight, which is Saturnian in nature.  Figures like Father Time correspond with The Ringed Planet which, as you know, rules Capricorn. How fitting, given that this sign is associated with not only the winter solstice and Christmas but also the annual celebration of “time” itself: New Year’s Eve. Saturnian figures are often linked with neutering or otherwise consuming the energy of the young and youthful, including their own children. This extreme measure stems from their fear of being dethroned by the next generation. This dynamic also reminds me of Krampus, the devilish companion of St. Nicholas whose sole duty is to punish bad children often by thrashing, eating or hauling them off to hell. Naturally, the hellish domain is ruled by The Devil whose tarot card corresponds with Capricorn. While I still have a bit of a soft spot for Santa, I find these symbolic parallels too hard to ignore. With all that said, consider the significance, or lack thereof, the next time you see a child on Santa’s lap. :: Book tarot sessions by text 503.893.4606, DM or through my site SymbolicStudies.com. Did you know I have a series called Symbolic Secrets just for patrons and supporters? It’s true! I’m ten episodes deep with each episode being roughly an hour long. Several weeks ago, I released my episode on The Strength card. In the presentation, I talk about how Strength symbolically conveys the unique relationship between two astrological signs: Leo and Virgo. I also go over the overlapping symbolism between felines, serpents and dragons. Lastly, I unpack the various reasons why older Strength cards depict a woman with a broken pillar. This is easily the deepest information I've put out regarding this card to date. So far, I have episodes on all the cards from The Fool to The Hermit and an episode on The Wheel of Fortune card is currently in production. If you like my posts you’ll love Symbolic Secrets. This series is available by monthly subscription through my website or Patreon for $5 a month and is a great way to support my work.
