Meet Ashley, the jefa behind @Anelia Co.! 💫 AneliaCo was inspired by her son, adding “The idea of our plate set came about when Lorenzo repeatedly asked to use our barro capulineado dishes for meals. I allowed him to use one for dinner, in typical toddler fashion, he instantly broke it. This got me thinking, how am I able to incorporate the rich culture of our beautiful Michoacán and other states within Mexico, into baby/toddler safe toys, tableware, and teethers.” Ashley is not only a small business owner, mother, and wife, she is also a pediatric ICU nurse. As a nurse she has done multiple medical mission trips that allowed her to travel and immerse herself in the culture. It opened her eyes to how not everyone has the opportunity to travel, especially back to their homeland. It sparked her desire to bring a little bit of home to those living abroad. As part of her research she made sure to speak and work with local artisans in Mexico to make sure her company is representing the traditional barro honorably. Her priority is to make sure her company is recognized as affordable, trustworthy, thoughtful and heartfelt. She adds, “Knowing that [I am] able to provide a child with a little piece of their parents and grandparents home” means everything. And her determination to honor and give back to her community doesn’t end there. She is hopeful to one day be able to sponsor a medical mission to Mexico through AneliaCo, being able to merge her worlds of nursing and being a small-business owner Being one of the first women in my family to go to college, I had zero background in business! Normally our glazing videos includes me opening a large bucket and stirring vigorously to be sure the glaze if fully mixed, but we wanted to glaze each ornament a different color so we have gone miniature with glazing these small ornaments. I also had to get creative in drying these ornaments since if I set them on the table, they would surely mess up the glaze application. Having said that I didn’t want to hold them till dry so a little creativity was necessary. A couple of kiln posts and a dowel is the exact thing I needed to hang these to dry as I finish glazing the other ornaments. Finally wadding is applied to the bottom so they can stand up in the kiln. This will ensure they don’t fall over and get stuck to another pot or kiln shelf. I apply the wading in a coil so that I can easily break the wadding away after the firing. This way the hanger stays in tact and doesn’t break when I break away the wadding. The last part of the process on these ornaments was the remove the wadding and hang these little gems. I make my wadding from 50% EPK (Kaolin) and 50% Alumina Hydrate. You mix these two dry materials with water into a clay-like consistency. Wadding breaks much easier than clay so I wouldn’t try this with clay. I think it would not remove as easily as wadding. Having said that, wadding breaks easily with a hammer and wood chisel. You just want to be sure that you don’t place the chisel right where the wire is so you don’t break the hanger. This is a bit of a continuation of the previous post which was how to cover your thrown pieces without messing them up. The next place where work can get messed up is uncovering and removing pots from the board. Sometimes they get stuck. You can wire them again, but you will definitely loose a little clay from the bottom and potentially mess them up.
