Note: I’ve left off the hospital name and been vague about some details to protect identities. Summer’s therapy cat visit at the hospital today was a little different from most. When we walked into Pediatrics there were a pair of uniformed officers sitting in the hallway. We’ve seen that before - it means that there’s a young patient having a mental crisis. Fortunately it was a quiet day in Pediatrics - so we were able to spend a lot of time with the patient who needed the officers. She was a teenaged girl and very sweet. She was an animal lover and so excited to see Summer! I had her give some paw shakes and she wanted to hold her. I let her know she might squirm, but she was very sensitive to her reactions and let go of her before she visibly wanted to leave. Eventually Summer laid down next to the girl in her chair while she chatted with me and one of the nurses. Of course the topic was her pets. This fragile girl needed to have a normal conversation and we stayed with her until it was time for us to go to Behavioral Medicine. It's a required visit on Thursdays. In Behavioral Medicine we had three patients visiting at first. All three of them were women, two younger, and one older. Later on we were joined by a gray haired man. Two out of four had pets, so talking about them was a big part of our visit. It was a very chatty visit, and we wound up running a lot longer than normal. It’s always a good thing when patients get to spend extra time away from other, less pleasant parts of their stay. Of course Summer’s job as a therapy cat is to lift the mood of any patients we’re visiting. But when we’re seeing the patients who are going through a bad time psychologically, it’s especially important. #catlovers #therapycat #catsoftiktok

Summer visited her assisted living pals this week. Like us, they were near mandatory evacuation and evacuation warning zones during the big wildfires, but it never spread near to them. They were having a quiet morning. There was a senior workout program on the TV but no one was paying attention to it. Most people were napping. Off in the far area of the big room, a lady in a wheelchair was meowing. So I brought Summer over to her. She only spoke Spanish, but it didn’t matter. She was happy enough just to pet and interact with Summer. (Still, I need to improve my Spanish skills!) A staff member was helping fix a bracelet belonging to the lady who loves Summer’s high fives. Once they were done, Summer went right over and jumped on the sofa next to her for some high fives. She actually did tricks for several residents this visit, which we usually don’t do. Summer also visited with her elderly lady friend. Sitting next to her on the sofa was the nonverbal woman who adores Summer. But she was deep asleep and never did wake up while we were there. Even though a lot of residents were napping there was a big demand for Summer’s time. One woman came into the big room and sat on the other side of the door while Summer was spending time with someone. She was obviously waiting for her, and even let a staff member know that she was next! So of course I took Summer over to her when we were done. We also stopped by the other house across the street, and it was a little more lively. There were animal videos on the TV, and a lot of people who loved cats. Summer had a very nice time seeing everyone, and it was a good break for both of us from all the craziness that has been going on during the past week. #therapycat #cattok #catsoftiktok

Wow these last 24 hours have been eye opening. Everything I shared was real. I could have shared a lot more but I had to keep people’s privacy in mind. #cat #therapycat
