Try not to beat yourself up about where you were or the beliefs you inherited without asking to. The journey towards understanding the gospel of Jesus is a long one. Christ himself even said that those near him and with ears to hear may not actually comprehend the good news he’s proclaiming. That’s because many of us are blinded by dogma and religion, and miss the focal point of Jesus‘s gospel ministry and message. Though you can’t change who you once were, you can embrace who you are today. More than that, you can help others either on the journey towards full inclusion, or considering taking a step that direction by loving them where they are and helping them see the fullness of God‘s love both for them and for all of God‘s creation. I get told a lot that I am not a real pastor. I’m a sheep and wolf clothing. That I am a false profit. I am nothing other than an instrument of sharing the radically inclusive gospel message of Jesus to a broken and divided world. Of course, being gay isn’t a sin. Jesus made it very clear. What marriage looks like, it looks like committed, loving, and consensual relationships between two adult adults. Though Jesus use men as an example marrying women, this is not grounds for excluding Jesus’s inclusion of LGBTQ+ people. The argument that Jesus never mentions homosexual couples, as the rationale for Jesus, believing that homosexual couples are living in sin is absolute nonsense. This kind of retribution based theology, built around the idea of cause-and-effect based on American actions is not only deeply nationalistic and disassociated with how global of a world we live in, but it’s also downright harmful and on biblical theology. There’s nothing good, redeeming, or intellectually honest about this sort of belief and who God is. God is just, and God is kind. But God is not arbitrary in vengeful meaningless moments as this creator proposes. The Gospel starts and ends with love—real, radical, all-encompassing love. In Revelation 2:4, Jesus calls out the church in Ephesus for losing their first love. They had great doctrine and worked hard, but they missed the heart of it all. And let’s be real: a lot of churches today are doing the same thing. When a church chooses to reject LGBTQ+ people, they aren’t just rejecting people—they’re rejecting the kind of love Jesus taught and lived. Throughout His ministry, Jesus went out of His way to include and uplift the people others ignored or excluded. He made it clear that loving “the least of these” is the same as loving Him. So how can a church claim to follow Jesus and then turn around and reject anyone He came to love? Exclusion isn’t love. And if your church isn’t rooted in love, then it’s not a church Jesus would recognize as His own. It’s time for churches to repent of exclusion, to go back to the radical, messy, beautiful love of Jesus. I appeared on @Jubilee for their show SURRONDED with famous atheist and rising star, @Alex O'Connor which just dropped on YouTube today. It was a ton of fun to meet Alex and share in conversation with him and other Christian’s and philosophers…. The later of which I am not. Though I wasn’t able to completely share the totality of what I believe, my ideas, or share as long as I would have like to, it was still an awesome experience and I hope one that brings some helpful dialogue to the conversation on faith. I hope to do it again one day! One thing I deeply believe in is curiosity and this was a great exercise in that pursuit. It doesn’t matter how many people tell me that Jesus wasn’t inclusive, I can’t hear it. I JUST CANT BELIVE IT EITHER. The gospel tells me otherwise. I’ve done the research, I’ve prayed about it, I’ve looked at the original text and the original languages, and no other place is able to be landed at other than the fact that Jesus is fully LGBTQ inclusive. That doesn’t mean Jesus is a Democrat, or republican, a progressive or a conservative, but it does mean that Jesus is fully inclusive of not just some people, but all people. But the gospel of Jesus Christ is good news not for some, but for all!
