I’ve been active since I was young, but at 61, staying fit feels like a whole new challenge. While I work out for my physical, mental, and emotional well-being, I’m deeply grateful that regular exercise allows me to stay active and enjoy life without hesitation. Of course, it hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had my share of injuries, aches, and pains. There were times in my life when I couldn’t afford a gym, yet I always found ways to move. Simple exercises like push-ups or running in place at home cost nothing but make a big difference. If you’re struggling to stick to your fitness goals, try this: place pictures on your fridge of activities or experiences you’d like to enjoy. Use them as motivation to get into the mental and physical shape needed to make those dreams a reality. Exercising is like investing in a savings account—it pays off over time. At 61, I’m reaping the rewards of a lifetime of movement. But I’m not stopping here. I want to keep going strong for the next 20 or 30 years. What motivates you to move? And if you’re still searching for that spark, what could inspire you to get off the couch and step into the world? #fitnessover50 #fitnessover60 #fitnessinfluencer #thisis61 #activeaging #activevacations #emptynestertravel #ActiveLiving #proaging #over50andfit #over60andfit
It’s been a challenging start to 2025, both mentally and emotionally. I’m still processing it. Since I was young, I’ve been fortunate to rely on exercise as my outlet during unresolved feelings, dark moments, or when I needed to escape reality. The truth is, there have been days this month when I just didn’t have the emotional strength to make it to the gym. Still, I managed to work out three times a week and fit in some yoga on other days. Movement has always been a vital part of my plan for navigating inner turmoil. Beyond that, physical exercise keeps us mobile and sharpens cognitive abilities. In my opinion, it’s a non-negotiable part of a healthy life. And it doesn’t have to involve a gym. When I was a single mom on food stamps, I ran outdoors or worked out at home. It wasn’t always easy, but because exercise has been ingrained in me since childhood, it’s a habit I simply can’t live without. In addition to staying active, I also go to therapy, take medication for anxiety and depression, journal, and meditate. How do you cope with tough times? Sending love and support to everyone affected by the California fires. Living in Florida, I know firsthand how devastating natural disasters can be. #fitover40 #fitnessover50 #fitover60 #thisis61 #FPmovement #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealth #gymworkout #fitnesstrainer
A memorable moment of 2024 was modeling for a college class of photography students taught by my friend, @selinaroman. It might seem like a small event in the grand scheme of things, but I left the experience feeling a deep sense of satisfaction and hope for the younger generation. These talented young women directed me—telling me how to pose, move, and express myself. I didn’t feel they were limited by preconceived notions of what 61 “should” look like. They embraced the possibilities. It also felt empowering to follow their guidance without hesitation, never needing to say, “Oh, I can’t do that.” In that moment, our ages didn’t matter. What truly mattered was the energy in the room—an energy that was vibrant, inspiring, and uplifting. Have you ever done something that seemed small but meant the world to you? #thisis61 #chicwish #clarasunwoo #inezshoes #photoschool #photoshoot #midlifemodel #fiftyplusandfabulous #over50model #over60model #ringlingcollege #proage
This reel captures the exact moment I decided that my physical goal for my 60s would be to achieve one unassisted pull-up. I was interviewing @ginnymaccoll for @vivafifty back in March of 2024 and, while I had long admired her Ninja Warrior achievements in her 70s—and loved her pull-up story in her 60’s—I hadn’t yet set a specific goal for this decade. In my 40s, it was completing a half marathon. In my 50s, it was mastering a freestanding handstand. I achieved both. I’m so thankful I didn’t know then that only about 20% of women can do a pull-up, even after training. Today I Googled the percentage for women over 60—it’s even smaller. At the time, I was still recovering from a torn rotator cuff, but I felt strong enough to give it a shot. Honestly, I assumed it would take me over a year, maybe longer, and I was okay with that. Even if I never reached the goal—and at times, it felt like I wouldn’t—at least I had tried. But yesterday… I did it. And I almost cried. I was thrilled, shocked and elated. I thought back to this moment (which I had to dig through a YouTube video to find! - link in bio) and how I had set a goal that truly felt unattainable. Taking action has never been an issue for me, but believing I could actually succeed at this? That was the challenge. Ginny, thank you for the inspiration and motivation that made me believe in the possibility—because once I did, everything changed. Now I feel like I can do anything. And, of course, that means I need a new goal… maybe four pull-ups with better form? Who knows! You never know who you might inspire to reach for something they never thought possible. It is NEVER too late to set new goals and work toward them! Who has inspired YOU to pursue a goal lately? #pullups #ginnymaccoll #thisis61 #over50andfit #over60andfit #over70andfit #fitnessinfluencer #yogateacher #ninjawarrior @Ginny MacColl

So before I met @Reneefitat70 in person, we chatted online for a video podcast which is finally edited and will soon be live. I am so excited about that. I was inspired all over by Renee - a 72-year old bodybuilder with her pro card - as I listened to it again. She and I have so many things in common, including that our energy and way of life often does not match most of our peers. I definitely should have said 30-somethings with kids as fewer women are having kids in their 20s but the concept is that I don’t make friends based on age and neither does she! My eldest daughter is 23 and one of her best friends is 69. This is the beauty of friendships based on common interests and energy. Give Renee a follow if you haven’t already and stay tuned for the full interview!
