On January 5, 1853, the Orleans Hotel, located on the west side of Second Street between J and K Streets, fully opened to the public following its rebuild. The original hotel burned down, along with 80 percent of Sacramento, on November 2, 1852. The Orleans planned to have its grand opening on January 1st but a New Year’s flood made the celebration small and unsuccessful. The original Orleans Hotel was built from lumber shipped to Sacramento from New Orleans, Louisiana around Cape Horn in 1849. The hotel was rebuilt with bricks after the fire and the construction took only 20 days. It was 3 stories tall, had 40 bedrooms, a restaurant, a saloon, and a 2,500 square foot billiard room. The Orleans Hotel had a strategic location just two buildings south of the B.F. Hastings building, which at one time housed the California Supreme Court, and was just over a block away from the steamboat landing. In the hotel’s long history, it had a notable guest list that included Mark Twain in 1866, Lola Montez, and Horace Greeley (the founder of the New York Tribune). The hotel served, at one time, as the headquarters of the California Stage Company and held many events. The building was raised to the new street level in 1865. In 1879, the Orleans Hotel was purchased by the firm of Whittier, Fuller & Co. and the company transformed the building into a retail store. The building was destroyed again in a fire in 1923. Today, a reconstruction of the Orleans Hotel resides at its original location in Old Sacramento. In this video, Shawn discusses the history of the Orleans Hotel in Old Sacramento. #SacHistoryMuseum #OnThisDay #TodayInHistory #oldsacramento #sacramentohistory #sactiktok #sacramento
