“If I’m only gonna take one train trip, I might as well splurge on the roomette.” - me to me almost 4 years ago 🚂 In February 2021, with wine in hand, I did a 2am Google search of “U.S bucket lists” which led to a rabbit hole on YouTube about @amtrak’s California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville, California - the most scenic train trip in the country. It was peak pandemic and the girl who made travel her entire personality (read: me) could not sleep and felt an itch to go somewhere after almost a year of no travel. Out of the country? Not an option. A road trip? I hate driving. A…train trip? I don’t even know how to plan that. But a few hours and glasses of wine later, I saw a train in the mountains. I felt confusion because tf was Amtrak doing up there?? And where was it going?? And wait it looks…cute…how do I join?? Though I am a Virgo who loves to plan, I also love the spontaneity of traveling. So the confusion changed to excitement and my fingers brushed the keyboard, inputting my credit card information, and paying $800 for a roomette, all my meals, and 3 days of views on a solo train trip that upcoming July. Sufficiently sleepy, tipsy, and ecstatic to have a trip booked, I closed my laptop and finally went to bed. It was the best sleep I’d had in months. It was the first of 5 long-distance train trips I’ve done since. And it was the train trip that made me fall in love with train travel. ❤️
