#TransCoach promotes support, guidance, and empowerment for transgender individuals exploring their identity. It fosters community, sharing resources, experiences, and advice on transitioning, self-acceptance, mental health, and navigating societal challenges.

One of the biggest myths that we see perpetuated with regard to trans people as this idea that we all die at an average age of 35. Nothing could be further from the truth. So, where did that figure come from and why does it become so popular in mainstream media and amongst trans people themselves? The number comes from the average age of Trans Women murdered in Brazil during a particular time period. Hardest statistic that we can then extrapolate out to a broader population of people around the world. But, it is a number that became very popular in mainstream media reports about the sad and tragic lives of trans people. Another day, another mass school shooting in the US. A shooter in Madison, WI, killed & injured a number of people at a private catholic school. The shooter was a 15 year old cis girl who apparently was an internet radicalised white racist ‘radical feminist’ (terf) who was obsessed with school shootings. While I have a lot to say about the need for gun control in the US, what all focus on today is the reality of the results of anti-trans misinformation & propaganda perpetuated by TERFs and Main Stream Media (MSM). Their seemingly unfettered use of fear-mongering, lies, & demonizing of trans people has led to increasing violence being perpetrated against us. Lots of us, older folks have lived through times where there were multiple instances of anti-LGBTQ+ violence directed at us. I remember sitting in crowded movie theaters or arenas - with gay performers or with Pride related themes - wondering if today would be the day that a shooter came in or a bomb was set off. Those fears have returned in this current climate. And, what I know to be true, is that the best way for us to respond is to simply survive. And thrive. While we must be conscious of our surroundings, of the people that we interact with, and how to defend ourselves, we cannot and should not give into fear. We exist. And stop. As the year draws to a close, it’s time for trans and non-binary folks to prepare for next year. Step one on your to-do list is to get your legal name change if you haven’t already done so. There are generally easy processes in place for you to do so. Check your local court websites for information on how-to do it, the costs involved, and the forms you’ll need. You may also have local bar groups putting on name change clinics throughout the year if you’d prefer to have someone prepare the paperwork for you. If you’re short on funds, there is usually an option to seek filing in forma pauperis - it’s essentially a system wherein you request relief from the court in not having to pay filing fees. Well, this is likely far too serious clip to be making this close to the holidays, but one must respond when necessary. You’ve likely seen that the incoming administration plans on erasing trans people from public life on day one of the implementation of their fascist oligarchic regime. Trans life expectancy, part 2. As I mentioned previously, the often repeated numbers related to life expectancy or not accurate. In fact, none of the ways in which trans life expectancy is measures have measured up. lol While there are several studies that indicate that transgender folks have an increased mortality rate, these studies have not modelled life expectancy nor have they measured mortality correctly. Part of the problem is that they keep measuring trans people against the wrong groups of cisgender people. For example, trans men’s mortality is measured against cis women. That makes absolutely zero sense. The reality is that the qualitative and systematic research needed to calculate the average life expectancy of transgender people has not yet been done. James tells his story from his pre-transition discomfort/questioning, through the ups & downs of transition, & of his life post-transition. His storytelling is vulnerable, open, & engaging.
