A Dinosaur So Well Preserved, It Looks Like a Statue! Borealopelta, discovered accidentally by Canadian miners, is one of the most spectacular fossil finds of all time. In March 2011, a construction worker named Shawn Funk visited an impressive dinosaur collection at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta. As he walked through halls full of ancient bones, he had no idea that a week later, heโd add to their ranks by finding one of the most spectacular dinosaur fossils of all time. Itโs an animal so well preserved that its skeleton canโt be seen for the skin and soft tissues that still cover it. When we look at dinosaurs in museums, it takes imagination to plaster flesh and skin on top of the bones. But for the dinosaur that Funk unearthedโa 110-million-year-old creature named Borealopeltaโimagination isnโt necessary. It looks like a sculpture. And based on pigments that still lurk within the skin, scientists think they know what colors the animal had. โIf someone wants to come face to face with a dinosaur, and see what it actually looked like, this is the one for that,โ says Caleb Brown from the Royal Tyrrell Museum, who has studied the animal. According National Geographic, which sponsored the five-year, 7,000-hour preparation of the fossil, itโs likely that the 3,000-pound,18-foot-long creature died in or near a river. Meet Horridus, the worldโs best-preserved and most complete Triceratops Meet Horridus. Named for its species epithet, Triceratops horridus, this huge skeleton stands about 2 m (6.6 ft) tall, 6 to 7 m (19.7 to 23 ft) long and weighs over a ton. And itโs the centerpiece of the new exhibition, Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs, at Melbourne Museum in Australia. Triceratops are among the most commonly found dinosaur fossils, thanks to their large bones โ particularly that uniquely recognizable skull โ that lend themselves well to fossilization. But even among all that competition, Horridus stands out as a specimen of international significance โ with 266 bones comprising 85 percent of the total skeleton, itโs the most complete and best preserved example of its species ever found. Horridus lived around 67 million years ago, in what is now Montana, USA. But rather than the baking badlands that the region is today, back in the Cretaceous it was a lush, swampy forest, and this environment is key to how Horridus became so beautifully preserved. โThis Triceratops was preserved in an ancient river channel, now part of the Hell Creek Formation in the Late Cretaceous in Montana,โ Ziegler explained. โAnd thatโs a river channel that most of the time is fairly quiet. But what we see surrounding this specimen in situ was an undifferentiated, massive sand body. Thatโs indicative of a pulse of water and a pulse of sediment that must have covered this animal relatively soon after it had died, and certainly before it was, say, scavenged by predators.โ ๐๏ธHorridus the Triceratops is permanently on display at the Melbourne Museum.
