This is the story of APT James, a Tobago giant who was born in Patience Hill, Tobago and first became a teacher at the Patience Hill Primary School. He went to Trinidad to seek better opportunities and became a stevedore in the oilfields working his way up to becoming a transport man. He was able to secure significant wealth for himself but wanted to do more. He entered politics in 1948 when the candidacy and voting restrictions allowed for anyone to participate regardless of wealth, class, gender or race. He became Tobago's first elected representative on the Trinidad and Tobago Legislative Council as we were still under Colonial rule at the time. He served Tobago well and the Island prospered under his leadership. One of his first duties was to traverse the entire island identifying the issues and challenges of his people compiling them into a comprehensive document and then travelling to England by boat to discus EVERY ITEM with the then Secretary of State for Colonial Affairs, Arthur Creech Jones. Jones was so impressed with James' meticulousness and comprehensiveness that it took them 4 days to go through each item which resulted in Tobago receiving the most transformative developments and sweeping reforms since Britain first began colonizing the island in thr 1700s. He died 64 years ago today of complications due to a stroke he had suffered days before. It is said he fought valiantly against the stroke but eventually it got the best of him January 5 1962. He did not live to see Trinidad and Tobago become an independent nation in August of that year. #trini_tiktoks #tobago #history #caribbeantiktok #caribbeantiktokeurs🇭🇹🇬🇾🇹🇹🇸🇷🇯🇲 #trinbago
