I love to highlight positive stories within the trucking industry that showcase our truckers as the hero’s they are. The Truckload Carriers Association has a wonderful program called the Highway Angel award where the recognize truckers for going above and beyond. So we are going to start featuring this wonderful recipients. Anthony Blunnie, from Woodville, TX who works for Knights Transportation was one of the winners of this award. Anthony received this award for recusing a injured woman who was involved in a crash, and her car caught on fire. This all began back on February 15, 2023 around 1pm in the afternoon. Blunnie was busy training a new truck driver on I-20 near Jackson, MS. In front of him he saw a van blow a tire, this caused the van to veer off the road and flip. Not long after the van flipped over it caught on fire. Blunnie ordered his trainee to pull the semi truck over to the shoulder of the road so they could assist the people inside of the van. Blunnie immediately jumped into action by grabbing his fire extinguisher and rushing to go help the people inside. When he got there he realized it was just a woman inside, as he approached he saw the flames were already inside of the van. Blunnie said “I went around to her side and tried to pull her out” finally Blunnie had no choice but to break her window. All of sudden as he was breaking the window another person had stopped to assist him and the two of them pulled her from the van with the flames quickly approaching the drivers seat. The woman inside of the van was a Dominoes pizza delivery person and she was on her way to work when her tire blew. Sadly the woman did sustain multiple injuries but luckily none of them were life threatening. If Blunnie had not stopped to assist her when he did the woman would not of made it, because just a few seconds after they got her out. The entire van was fully engulfed in flames. The highway angels award is given to drivers for exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage displayed while on the job and I would say that Blunnie defiantly fits that bill.
