The painting may be "hidden" at first glance, especially to anyone seeing my work for the first time, even though it's in plain sight. I work hard to make paintings that are seemingly "invisible." I find this amusing because many artists do the opposite–they make their paintings stand out through bold color choices and energetic compositions. In contrast, you'll often hear me say, "we need to dull this color wayyy down" to match the gentle tones of nature. For my own work, I've long since come to prefer the often understated colors of nature to more saturated, modern colors. In a way, I feel like my paintings would have their own personalities. I know they're just objects, but I treat them respectfully, as I would a person. I feel like they are shy and want to become one with nature, as though they belong there and its their calling. So, it's my job, if not my duty, to ensure they achieve that. Many in my online community, including me, have a sense of curiosity in seeing what we call "walk behinds," like in this video. When I walk behind, the painting momentarily appears. I keep the walk behinds short because the paintings almost seem to have a "do not disturb" vibe; I want to give them space after to settle back in and disappear again. Although they're just paintings, this connection I have with them is what makes them turn out well. I pay attention closely to them and seem to have an intuition for what they need, whether it's more blue, more contrast, or increased definition. I fit in as many details as I can before my lighting changes. 🖼 To learn more about the original artwork from this illusion or acquire it for your collection, visit my online gallery.
