One day, you wake up, and you’re 27. Your back hurts. Somehow, you’re in a doctorate program. Yesterday, you hiked from Georgia to Pennsylvania. The day before, you drove across America. Last week, you ate dinner in Afghanistan. You’re older now than your dad was when he had you. Thank god. Somewhere along the way, you learned that life never gets easier; it just gets different. Somewhere along the way, you learned to be okay with that. It took violence to teach kindness, and silence to teach volume. Now, you’re soft, and you like it better that way. I don’t post on here as often as I used to. Partially because my own creative outlets and desires have changed, and partially because I feel too busy as of late. Veterinary school is incredibly rigorous. At times it pays to remind myself about the long path I took to get here. I started posting on this app back sometime in 2018/2019, though I’ve since taken down most of my old posts. I was still in the Army working as a medic then. Deep down I knew I had to get out, but at that point I had no idea what I wanted to do. It would be another six months before I connected my love of medicine to my love of animals and conservation. Four years of undergrad, research, and life experiences still separated me from the point I’m at now. I enjoyed the ride. If this app really does get banned, I’m happy that I was able to connect with so many of you in so many different ways. I do have an Instagram: @ jamesmecca if you want to follow me somewhere else.
