For those of you who don’t know me my name is Steve Grody I have been documenting graffiti culture, primarily in Los Angeles, since 1990 and write about the historical, aesthetic and cultural aspects of modern graffiti. I have started a new Substack column that I believe some of you may find interesting maybe even mind blowing, while others may have no interest whatsoever. Good thing it’s optional! You can find it at https://stevegrodygraffitifile.substack.com/ There are many reasons why someone outside of graffiti culture might want to have a better understanding of contemporary graffiti. It is very much part of urban environments, and everyone has an opinion about it, so we might also want to have a better understanding and educated eye about it, love it or hate it. Subjects that I write about and will post on my page include: - Graffiti as a human imperative and continued human tradition - Distinctions between kinds of contemporary graffiti - The difference between “Street Art” and modern “Style Writing” graffiti and its technical aspects - The difference between gang writing and other kinds of graffiti - The distinction between vandalistic and non-vandalistic illegal graffiti (and I do acknowledge the difference between the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) - Shared visual principles between graffiti and traditional art practices - The relationship between graffiti and the present museum and gallery scene - Ethical questions between graffiti writers, and between graffiti writers and the public I will be illustrating these issues with images drawn from my archive of tens of thousands of images I’ve taken over the last 34 years. The highs and the lows of contemporary graffiti culture are extreme, and while recognizing that that’s the case, my main goal is to help people have a more nuanced, less knee-jerk reaction. If you know anyone you think would be interested, please pass this along!
