There’s an awful lot of misinformation out there about who Walt Disney was. He wasn’t perfect (as no person is) but he also wasn’t the horrible human many believe he was based off of some poorly-sourced stories that have been told about him in the past (which we will dig into throughout this series). As we move farther and farther away from a time when people who actually knew Walt were prevalent, I think it’s important that we tell the story of who he really was. Walt was a perfectionist with a temper, a doting, father, a playful human, a visionary, an introvert at times, and a believer of the good in people. He was complex and charismatic and simple and kind. He was also demanding and irritable and a terrible delegator. He was like us, and unbelievably unique, both. While we explore these stories together, I hope that each one (sourced from those who encountered Walt personally) help all of us understand who the person of Walt Disney truly was, and the ways he changed our culture and the world in significant ways. And because I know someone is going to say something about it, Walt loved animals and never sought to harm them in any way. It’s likely that most people didn’t know that popcorn is really bad for birds in the 1960s.
