February of 2021, almost a year into the pandemic, after watching friend after friend drop out of the workforce due to a lack of support and unsustainable demands during the height of pandemic shutdowns, I saw a video of someone describing how she wishes some men would do a better job “helping out” instead of pretending they can’t do basic things. I was sick and tired of the narrative that men are “helping their wives” and that skirting responsibility was normal or acceptable within partnerships. I used the phrase “Weaponizing their competency”, underlining the seriousness of the behavior. Since then, I’ve made hundreds of videos on weaponized incompetence, domestic equity, care work, capitalism, culture. I’ve partnered with organizations to develop curriculum on these topics, led events, started a podcast and written a book(coming out this year!!!!). I’ve found an incredible community online and offline and I’ve watched this term work its way into the public lexicon, describing this harmful behavior. I’ve watched as more and more it’s been called out and the jokes about it have been disrupted. This video feels like a piece of personal history, a pivot point in my life. Thank you thank you for being a part of my life and growing with me. ❤️
