There’s no right or wrong when it comes to light! It’s all about how to use it & the look that it gives! You may have a vision for your day that favors golden hour or direct flash but there’s pros to all. & most weddings I capture include at least 4 of these at minimum. Plus this isn’t even all the light options… there’s more like ambient light / candle light for example. Light is such an important part of photography & can totally change the overall feel of a photo! Fun fact: I like to control my light when I can (obviously can’t control the sun haha I wish) & I often turn off lights inside homes that create harsh spotlights from above! I always get asked every wedding if I made the room too dark but I promise it makes it better 🔥 Direct sunlight -natural spotlight!! -highlights colors, bluest of skies and warms up photos -obvious shadows! Can be harsh if not angled right -can be any time of day! Golden hour -aka the best of the best time of day & favorited by many photogs -created the dreamy, soft, almost diffused-like glow with a warmer color palette -doesn’t exist on overcast days sadly Midday light -when sun is at the highest point in the sky creating the brightest light and harshest shadows -can be harder to hide from the sun & what way you stand / face can make or break a photo Overcast -clouds act as a giant diffuser for the sun creating a beautiful even light -can face any direction / have any background & the sun won’t interfere Blue hour -the hour after golden hour when the sun goes below the horizon! -cooler tones & nighttime vibes! Off cam flash -flash that is off to the side (not directly from camera), acting either as its own light source or supporting on camera flash -creates dramatic and moody vibes that often feel romantic -add depth to small spaces by creating shadows Direct flash -flash that is on the camera and pointed towards the subject -can be diffused or used to create motion blur -I often use ambient light or background lights (like windows or string lights) to balance it out and add depth when possible 🌞✨🎂🔥💡🙌🏻
