Susan Spicka, Executive Director of Education Voters of Pennsylvania, detailed how some Pennsylvania school districts are benefitting from closing the education funding gap between poorer and wealthier school districts. The new funds are allowing school districts to hire more teachers, fund important programs and reopen libraries. Spicka and other education advocates gathered in Harrisburg on Tuesday and called on the legislature to close the $4 billion education funding gap over the next four years. ✏️ 🎥 : Sean Kitchen #Pennsylvania #PAPolitics #PANews #PAPol #Philadelphia #Pittsburgh #Harrisburg #Scranton #NEPA #WesternPa #WesternPennsylvania #CentralPa #CentralPennsylvania
Twenty-one states, including four neighboring states, raised their minimum wage on New Year’s Day, but Pennsylvania wasn’t one of them. Pennsylvania’s minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 an hour since 2009, which was when the federal government raised the minimum wage nationally. The commonwealth has the lowest minimum wage compared to all six of our neighboring states. New York has the highest minimum wage at $16.50 per hour, followed by New Jersey at $15.49, Delaware and Maryland at $15, Ohio at $10.70, and West Virginia $8.75. Pennsylvania House Democrats passed legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 in last year’s legislative session, but Senate Republicans failed to vote on the bill. ✏️ 📸 : Sean Kitchen #Pennsylvania #PAPolitics #PANews #PAPol #Philadelphia #RaiseTheWage #MinimumWage #Pittsburgh #Harrisburg #WesternPA #CentralPA #CentralPennsylvania
To put it into perspective, Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg, a senior attorney with the Public Interest Law Center, explains how it has been close to a decade since school districts and education advocates sued the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over its unconstitutional public education funding. It took close to 10 years for the case to make its way through the court system, but in Feb 2023, the Commonwealth Court sided with the education advocates and ruled that the state has failed to meet its constitutional obligations to adequately fund public education. Urevick-Ackelsberg and others called on the Pennsylvania General Assembly to close the $4 billion education funding gap between poorer and wealthier school districts over the next four years at a press conference in Harrisburg on Tuesday. ✏️ 🎥 : Sean Kitchen #Pennsylvania #PAPolitics #PANews #PAPol #Philadelphia #Pittsburgh #Harrisburg #Scranton #NEPA #WesternPa #WesternPennsylvania #CentralPa #CentralPennsylvania
