The way I prefer to swing my saddles on the horse…I rest the saddle on my right hip and grab with my right hand the opposite fender and skirt. Why ? Because it gives you more control over how the saddle swings up onto your horses back, you can control the fender, the speed and the way the saddle makes contact with the horses back. Using my right side of my body, working with my core, movement and momentum rather than having to manage the full weight of the saddle with just my shoulders ( easy way of injuring yourself too.. rotator cuff injuries etc are easy to be strained again..) Some people prefer to grab the cantle of the saddle in this position. I personally prefer to grab the edge of the fender and the skirt. Both positions work very well. In my scope of work I come across lots of horses with old saddle trauma or simply holes in their training when it comes to saddling. Typical resistance responses in horses with saddling issues are bracing, holding their breath, pinning the ears or walking off/ fidgeting as you’re getting ready to swing the saddle onto the back. A big fear response in horses that’s not uncommon is bracing against the fender and stirrup coming down on the off side, while placing the saddle onto the back.
