I'm bringing back my favorite series for Black History month: "Woke Black History!" Every day in February we'll be diving into Black activists, changemakers and world leaders who have made a significant impact, but whose names you may not have heard of. But why the word "woke?" Over the past few years, the word "woke" has been co-opted by some as an insult. But the phrase originated from AAVE starting in 1962, and was used within Black communities and social justice communities to call for an awareness i.e. to stay woke. I think it's important to recognize the history and people that have led us to today, including the words that have been co-opted for negative purposes; especially amidst the increasing assault on Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and claims that the federal government won’t celebrate BHM. Tune in and drop who you want me to talk about below! #joelbervell #medicalmythbuster #wokeblackhistory #blackhistorymonth #wetheculture
