it's pretty remarkable, one person after another getting to see their light and life in their eyes. it shows up so well and some people, but it's true of all of us.. the light that we create when we're communicating, is so special in so many ways, and it just can't be reversed because it just doesn't look/read right and then just goes away. and it's not reversed, to the person looking at themselves, that light and life continues, and quite an amazing thing to witness.. We're so much more alive IRL than what we see and know in regular mirrors. The true mirror reflects us accurately and Ally, letting us see that aliveness. It's that light in the eyes that's "us" coming out, and seeing it is so validating! Certainly true in public, where we are going to be more active, but also true in private, where our intimate close moments with ourselves continue to be real and engaging. In contrast, the reversed version of us in mirrors, especially alone, is so much less of us, and can be confusing to reconcile with. On top of everything else relating to seeing your true reflection, the movement is different. It feels sped up because if you move to your right it moves to its right, as opposed to the left like it usually does. So it's definitely strange, but also strange because you're always in the middle of the true mirror, so you're both moving and you're stationary the same time. But ultimately the point is not the strange optics and the strange physics, but the strange psychology, which is actually the normal psychology of your normal unreversed face, and it's only the mirror that's actually really strange thing in our experience. #truemirror #selfimage #whoweare #realsmile #artportkingston

It's been a very interesting year with true mirrors, because it's been lots of exhibitions, lots of contacts, my first ever workshop, and the 33rd year that I've been making these true mirrors! I hope to make more of these one to one videos to go into more depth about true mirrors, perhaps in a more polished setting, but as usual, today, the artist in me is bouncing off the walls, bc so many things going on, thus polish is not happening! It was really fun to show people the True Mirror at the venture Capital summit, because it's just so completely different than what they're used to see at these conventions.. it's all about AI. What's cool is that the true mirror is about AI except in the sense that it's authentic intelligence about yourself, not artificial!
