Sen. Ron Johnson supports President Trump’s attempt to redefine the interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution—spreading misinformation in the process. Johnson and Trump falsely claim that the United States is nearly alone in providing citizenship to all who are born here, regardless of their class, race, or status. In fact, dozens of countries do the same. If Trump and Johnson want to start reimagining the original intent of Constitutional amendments, Founding Editor Pat Kreitlow has a suggestion on where to start. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #news #trump #immigration
After Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu signaled that Senate Republicans may introduce legislation to restrict abortion care during this legislative session, Governor Evers promised to veto any abortion ban that crosses his desk. 🎥: Elisabeth Montemurro #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #reproductivefreedom
TRUMP & THE WISCONSIN ECONOMY – People who voted for President Trump did so last November for a lot of reasons, many of them rooted in wanting to see a better economy. But Wisconsin’s economy has already been ahead of the national average. If anything, what Trump promised in his inaugural address could end up stopping or even reversing the state’s post-pandemic recovery. Founding Editor Pat Kreitlow urges people to pay attention to Trump’s deeds, not his words, and whether those actions help or hurt Wisconsin’s bottom line. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics #trump #economy

Instead of addressing affordability issues for Wisconsinites, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) recently signaled support for President Trump's mass deportation efforts. But Governor Tony Evers has argued that deportations could negatively impact Wisconsin's economy. Wisconsin Watch reported earlier this month that approximately 70,000 undocumented immigrants reside in Wisconsin. A majority of undocumented immigrants in the state are employed and a driving force in Wisconsin manufacturing, hospitality and dairy industries. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #immigration
WHY ISN’T CONVERSION THERAPY BANNED? – The practice of trying to “convert” an LGBTQ person through questionable methods is so outside the bounds of accepted science that some states are banning the practice. That should’ve been the case in Wisconsin by now, but a small committee in the Republican-controlled Legislature is claiming the power to indefinitely block any ban on conversion therapy. Gov. Tony Evers is asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to step in. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics #lgbtq
WONDERING WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING WITH MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY? Mary Metz, UW-Madison Professor Emerita, and Senior Advocate is warning that big cuts might be on the way. Donald Trump didn't mention Medicare and Social Security in his inaugural address. He also didn't promise to save it or promise to cut it-but people who examine the words and deeds of his backers say big cuts are going to be attempted and they explain why. On Monday, Congressman Mark Pocan hosted a news conference to shed light on issues like these, meeting with individuals and groups that may be affected during the Trump presidency. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics #medicare #socialsecurity
On Thursday, Assembly Democrats announced their first package of bills for this legislative session, aimed at lowering costs for Wisconsinites. Assemblyman Ryan Spaude (D-Ashwaubenon) announced one of the bills in this package, "Less for Rx," which will lower the cost of prescription drugs and increase prescription drug price transparency. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics
ANOTHER 9-MONTH PAID VACATION? – Republicans running the Wisconsin Legislature clearly did not hear enough from taxpayers about the nine-month paid vacations they gave themselves in 2020, 2022, and 2024, because they’re already baked one into their schedule for 2026. Democratic lawmakers voted no to the session schedule passed by Republicans, saying there’s no reason legislators —who are paid a full-time, year-round salary— could keep working until late spring before having to begin campaigning for reelection. What are your thoughts on legislators planning to again work only until February and then go home for the year in 2026? #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics
CELEBRATING RESILIENCE – President Trump started his second term by denigrating the Hispanic community and promising mass deportations, but its members in Wisconsin say they are here to stay, contributing to the economy and should be celebrated. Speaking at an event hosted by Congressman Mark Pocan to highlight the Martin Luther King Day of Service, Centro Hispano Executive Director Karen Menéndez Coller said it’s important to recognize the longstanding work within the Latino and immigrant communities to address issues like health care, mental health, and workforce development. She called for stronger allyship and collaboration to ensure equity within communities across Wisconsin. Pocan said he skipped Trump’s inauguration in order to focus on supporting the individuals and groups about to be affected by the Trump presidency. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics #trump
BACK TO THREATENING THE POST OFFICE – Before President Trump was unseated in 2020, there was plenty of controversy about whether he and his Postmaster General Louis DeJoy were moving toward weakening and even privatizing the US Postal Service. The idea is sure to come up in Trump’s second term, so the Wisconsin state president of the letter carriers’ union joined an Inauguration Day news conference by Congressman Mark Pocan to remind people that USPS cutbacks hurt people in many ways, from rural service to delivery of medicines and more. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics
“Healthy School Meals For All,” new bill co-authored by Rep. Francesca Hong (D-Madison) and Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee), would provide free school meals for all Wisconsin students. If implemented, it is estimated that the bill would save Wisconsin parents $150 / month on groceries. Hear more about the bill UpNorthNews Radio on Wednesday, when Rep. Hong stops by to discuss the bill and the new legislative session. #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics
PFAS, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND THE FIGHT FOR ACCOUNTABILITY- On Tuesday, Midwest Environmental Advocates held a news conference after Wisconsin Supreme Court oral arguments in Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce v. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The case, dating back to 2021, challenges the state’s authority to regulate PFAS and other hazardous substances under the Spills Law, a critical environmental protection. During the conference, Dr. Beth Neary highlighted the dangers of PFAS, linking them to cancers, immune system damage, and reduced vaccine effectiveness, especially harmful to children and more. Environmental advocates say that if Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce wins, it would dismantle the state’s only significant protection against PFAS contamination, which has devastated communities like Marinette, Peshtigo, and La Crosse. Efforts such as well testing and cleanup plans could come to a standstill, leaving residents vulnerable to exposure. ✏️: Cherita Booker #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #wisconsinpolitics #pfas
MUMPS IN WISCONSIN 🦠 😷 Before the introduction of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine in the 1970s, mumps was a common disease in the US, infecting more than 180,000 kids each year. In the 1960s, mumps was the leading cause of hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear and aseptic meningitis which is inflammation of the membrane that covers your brain and spinal cord. When the MMR vaccine was introduced in 1971, mumps cases dropped by 99%. By the early 2000s, only a few hundred cases were reported each year. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says there are currently five mumps cases in Wisconsin. 🎥/✏️: Salina Heller #wisconsin #wisconsinnews #cdc #mumosn
