When we think of @eyeswoon, we think of elegance, romance, and inimitable personal style. So when Athena asked us to help refinish the wood in her historic Tribeca home, we knew it had to reflect those same integral qualities. Some might argue that the aged patina was worth preserving, but true preservation lies in honoring the integrity of the material itself. This was the initial conversation and the first concern Athena brought to our attention—her desire to retain the historical provenance of the wood paneling. However, the woodwork had suffered over the years. Unbalanced sun exposure, poorly applied sealants, and improper staining had left it orange, peeling, and dull. This wasn’t a beloved patina or a cherished aged varnish; it was a layer of damage—bubbling, warping, and cracking—that obscured the natural beauty of the white oak beneath. By carefully stripping away the years of wear and tear, we uncovered stunning white oak—a blank canvas for Athena to create something timeless. Now, this woodwork has the opportunity to age gracefully, developing a patina imbued with her family’s story, knowledge, and care over the next century. If these walls could talk, we’re sure they’d say they’re the luckiest in New York to be part of Athena's world, steeped in design integrity. The next phase is for Athena to choose the perfect stain that celebrates the depth and warmth of the Art Deco era. We’re so excited to see the magic she creates with her design team in this beautiful home and are honored to be a small part of it.
