Did you (s)now...there’s snow in the forecast across the state this weekend, and into early next week? Our partners at @nwsseattle and NWS Spokane have made it very clear, there’s going to be snow in the lowlands, and even more snow in the mountains statewide. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or just running errands this weekend, conditions will be challenging wherever you go, particularly Friday night to Saturday afternoon, and Sunday evening to Monday morning. Heavier snow will be found along routes to our mountain passes, along highways and I-5 north of Everett, and along US 101 between Port Angeles and Lake Quinault.    If you absolutely need to venture out this weekend, please take these tips with you before you head out the door: -Check road conditions to know before you go: Check our real-time travel map on our website or mobile app, where you can find our traffic cameras, and mountain pass conditions (and tire/chain restrictions too).  -Please drive for conditions – slow down, increase following distance, get those headlights and taillights on and avoid sudden movements.  -Make sure your vehicle has your winter emergency kit with blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, a full tank of gas, batteries, and a phone charger. -Watch for ice on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas. Roads are likely to refreeze especially overnight, and while our crews will be out treating and plowing, use extra caution. -Give our snowplows plenty of space – don’t pass them, and stay back to avoid flying snow and debris. -Pack chains and know how to install them if you’re traveling through mountain passes.   Remember, most road and pass closures are often not due to just the weather - they’re typically due to collisions as a result of poor driver behavior. Plan ahead, drive safe and be prepared! Another graphic warns travelers of wintry precipitation is in the forecast with sweaty Jordan Peele reaction under. More snow on road clips after, telling travelers to yield to snow plows. #fyp #WSDOT #SnowPlow #WAWx #snow #ice #Washington #Winter #pnw #meme #Seattle #Spokane

And we’re ready for it. 😤 With 563 plows in our statewide fleet, we’re ready for whatever winter brings. And with a glance at our mountain pass cameras this morning... looks snow is back on the menu.   But we can’t do it alone. Most of the time, it’s not weather closing the passes - it’s crashes and spin outs due to unprepared drivers. Do your part by slowing down, leaving plenty of following distance for other drivers and following the posted chain up requirements.   And, as always, please give our plows PLENTY of room to work. Stay back, let them do their thing and wait for the plow operator to pull over and let you pass.   A special shout out to our Selah shed crew for letting us film their preparation for this weekend’s weather. This crew covers SR 823, SR 821, I-82 just east of Ellensburg to Union Gap and SR 24 from Yakima to Moxee to Vernita. Thank you to all of our crews who will spend their weekend battling the elements. #wsdot #Washington #SnoqualmiePass #StevensPass #WhitePass #BlewettPass #fyp #Snowplow #WinterStorm
Snow this week? Bring it on. Our crews have been busy around the state plowing and treating and maintaining and monitoring to help you get where you need to go. Thanks for doing your part to slow down and give plows plenty of space. Our drivers notice and appreciate it — some have mentioned that it has gotten better recently. So give yourself a round of applause! But not while you’re driving. In fact, you shouldn’t be reading this while you’re driving 👀 #wsdot #Washington #SnowPlow #WinterWeather #Spokane
Mountain snow in the Washington Cascades normally peaks from March to April. This puts the Washington State Department of Transportation on a higher lookout for avalanches that may threaten Interstate 90. KOMO News Meteorologist George Waldenberger met up with an avalanche specialist at Snoqualmie Pass to talk about how crews control an avalanche threat if, and when, it develops. The Washington State Department of Transportation’s snow study plot is located across from The Summit at Snoqualmie, often fabled as “where Seattle learned to ski.” It's adorned with all sorts of gauges, tools, and measuring equipment to monitor the snowpack's evolution through the winter season. 🔗 in bio for the full story. #komo #komo4 #komonews #komo4news #seattle #washington #Avalanche #science #wsdot #snoqualmie #i90 #snoqualmiepass #Avalanchecontrol #explainer #explainervideo #safety #winter #snowpack #wsdot #ski #slopes #treewell #summit #cascades #mountain #snow #skisafety #skiresort #4u #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #foryourpage
There are no lane reductions on the highway to my heart. Is that love in the air? *deep inhale* Maybe it’s just fresh asphalt. Whether your Valentine is a beloved, a best friend or that situationship you’re trying to untangle from, we hope these cards make you sound as smooth as a freshly paved road.   Happy Valentine’s Day from your state transportation agency! Imagine getting a road closure alert via singing telegram 💀 Even as the future of TikTok recalculates faster than your GPS, we’re still on the road to give you traffic and project updates without any unnecessary detours. Have you downloaded our app? It’s like social media. But no social. And the media is traffic maps, ferry routes and mountain pass updates. Pretty exciting stuff! You can find it by searching WSDOT in the App Store or Google Play. #wsdot #Washington #fyp #DontStopMeNow #Traffic
We love a transformation story, especially a roundabout one!  Construction for the southbound I-5/Slater Road roundabout in Whatcom County is winding down. What a journey it’s been—from a small, compact one-lane roundabout to a graceful, two-lane beauty north of Bellingham (milepost 260). Just like how a certain awkward teen became a poised princess, the southbound I-5/Slater Road interchange has undergone a major glow-up! Thanks to a a lot of hard work by our crews, we've got a brand new, two-lane roundabout fit for a king and queen! Remember, every great transformation requires a bit of practice—just like Mia Thermopolis had to learn the royal ways. So, as you glide through this splendid new roundabout, remember miracles do happen if you believe, like: slowing down, zipper merging and yield appropriately.  We believe in you! Straighten your tiaras and crowns Whatcom County travelers, and navigate with confidence! We bring the boom (and the loaders, blowers, and plows to clean up after ourselves). After multiple snow slides closed US 97 Blewett Pass on Sunday, Feb. 23, our avalanche control team assessed the conditions and determined avalanche control was needed. The answer was YUP. With the pass closed, they used detonated explosives to release the avalanche. Our maintenance crews cleaned up the snow that reached the roadway, and we were able to open a few hours later. #fyp #WSDOT #AvalancheControl #Avalanche #Washington #BlewettPass #Leavenworth #Wenatchee #Ellensburg
