#153: The Sphere at Liberty Park If you’re walking around Liberty Park, just south of the 9/11 Memorial, you’ll come across this damaged sculpture that was once the centerpiece of the World Trade Center plaza. This is The Sphere by Fritz Koenig. Commissioned in 1968, The Sphere was created by Fritz Koenig at the request of Minoru Yamasaki — architect of the World Trade Center. The 22-ton sculpture was installed at the Plaza Fountain, and would actually rotate, making a full turn every 15 minutes. After the attacks on 9/11, the sculpture was recovered from underneath the rubble. While it was heavily damaged, it remained largely intact, making it the only World Trade Center artwork to survive. It was later relocated to Battery Park on March 11, 2002. The reinstallation was supervised by Koenig himself — who had reservations about re-erecting the sculpture at first. With construction of the 9/11 memorial, there were conversations about the sculpture’s future. Ultimately, on September 6, 2017, the Sphere was unveiled in its permanent home in Liberty Park, overlooking the World Trade Center site. You can still see the damages to the sculpture, which have been purposely left unrepaired.
