Technology has so many beautiful benefits but it has also caused us to stop having intentionally clear conversations. The conveniences of social media and phones has caused us to solve problems with long text messages, emojis, GIFs and subliminal posts on social media. It’s bonkers! As a millennial couple, we’ve seen the rise of social media during our relationship. We can’t speak for every marriage or relationship but we’ve seen how those long, wordy text messages can be received with a tone that wasn’t intended. Bae and I practice clear communication by making sure our intentions and impact align. Sometimes we will have greater intentions for what we want to convey but when we put it in a text message while the situation is hot, the impact of the message gets lost because we’re reading it with the tone of offense. People run automatic programs based on their traumas, past experiences and other factors that cause them to run things through several filters before the message is decoded. Offenses happen when that message goes through a bad filter that is triggered by preprogrammed behaviors. Truth be told @Disney set us up 😅 Most little girls experienced the ‘Disney effect’ growing up where we shaped our romantic concepts off of what the Princesses showcased. We wanted to be swept off our feet and wowed and then we all grew up and realized that Disney wasn’t reality. This is when shows like ‘Living Single’ made sense 😅 As a millennial who was raised by 90s sitcoms and whimsical cartoons, it was hard to detach from the idea that I could find my Dwayne in college or meet my Will Smith while doing what I loved. I experienced heartbreak before I was ever wined and dined and that caused me to shape what my experiences with men would be like. I formed this idea that I would have to “raise a man” and teach him how I wanted to be catered to. But then I met my husband… Although my husband wasn’t together when we met at the tender ages of 14, I saw the potential. I knew that I would have to guide him while unlearning fairytales and embracing the ebbs and flows of relationships. We learned how to navigate hard conversations and get to the bottom of what we truly desired that words couldn’t express. Most times humans just want to be seen, valued and heard and that looks different for every woman and man. Disney may not have been a practical way to build romantic concepts in this odd world but it did show us how to hold value.
