Amazon is pulling out of Quebec and some say the timing of the move is no coincidence. The company announced Wednesday that it will shut down all seven of its facilities in the province in the coming weeks, cutting nearly 2,000 jobs, including 1,700 permanent positions. Instead, the retail giant said it would outsource deliveries to smaller contractors, insisting the decision was tied to cost savings and not a new union. Quebec is home to Amazon’s only unionized workforce in Canada. About 300 workers at its Laval warehouse unionized last year, saying they were dissatisfied with what they described as a hectic work pace, low wages and inadequate health and safety measures. Reporting for The National, CBC’s Vanessa Lee spoke to employees who said they were shocked by the sudden move.
