The winter milking routine is probably my favourite time of the year.. It's the most amount of hours spent in the pit! I can easily be in the parlour for 8 hours a day, sometimes more depending on if we have any problems (cows with mastitis/lameness). Alot of people overlook the milking role. I'm not just in here milking the girls. Milking time is my time to see each and every one of them. I can access how they walk and look for any foot problems, if they are eating and milking how they should be. I can spot bulling cows in the parlour and in the yard. Most importantly I can get to know the cows. I know that 633 (Manny) and 941 will not push up no matter how hard you try. You are wasting your breath. Just give them 2 places. 899 (Wiggles) is your backstop in the highs, 814 is your backstop in the second cubicles (she's useless but she has to come in on the end) and dear 2265 is your backstop in the lows. Just make sure you give her extra cake or she will back out. (she deserves it come on she's 12!) Heifers 23, 380, 373 will need a kickbar or some extra time, they will kick that unit off. 938, 922, 989 and 948 loveee to kick their units off when they hit half milked. Isn't that weird how they are all 900s. Must of been a bad year! Anyway they will kick the unit off in every milking without doubt. Usually a telling off and putting it back on works. Extra cake sweetens the deal. 737 (Monster moo) will come for cuddles and expect a apple on exiting the parlour. As will 338 (Biscuit) must watch her though if you give her treats she will try to kick you, not sure how that works but there you go! 917 will hang around at the back and expect to be massaged because she is a queen. Of course she gets her own way because she's pretty. And last but not least 359 (Dotty) will come for a head scratch then probably kick you in the parlour. Or turn around.
