If YOU Don’t Know This Fly, YOU’RE Missing Out! Most of us know the Woolly Bugger, created by Russell Blessing back in 1967. He designed the fly to mimic Dobsonfly larva for smallmouth bass and later added the marabou tail that gave it its signature look. Despite not being a hardcore fly tier at the time, it’s now one of the most well-known and successful fly patterns out there, inspiring hundreds of variations. This version is close to the original, minus the grizzly hackle (the original was black) and, of course, without UV resin. If you don’t know this pattern, I’m not sure what rock you’ve been under, but you should definitely give it a try! Most Don’t Use These Productive Flies.. This is just one variation of a wet fly I like to fish, particularly in the fall, to represent small emerging insects (Gnat Wet fly). While often overlooked by most modern anglers, these wet flies are quite productive and have been used for centuries. Whether you fish it under an indicator or swing it through the current, I suggest giving it a try. It’s a fun and relaxing way to fish—simply cast it across the current, let it swing, and fish will often hook themselves when taking the fly. These typically fish best when insects are emerging, but they can also trigger bites as fish make quick decisions about whether to go after it, often leading to aggressive takes. Try THIS Unconventional Fly!! This is a little wet fly-style ant that I was asked to recreate for a custom order a few weeks back. Another one I’ve never actually fished but seems interesting, so I might have to give it a try. Banned Lure “Too Productive”?!? This is yet another fly pattern that was so productive it was actually banned from use in some competitive angling. This fly, in particular, is called The Zulu, a hot spotted wet fly that is notoriously used for sea trout; however, it works on a larger variety of species. Fish it on its own, in a nymph or wet fly rig, or tie it as a trailer to a streamer. Either way, this is a great wet fly to add to your fly box. Try THIS Before It’s BANNED!! This is a pattern created by Cheech at @flyfishfood, taking inspiration from both a perdigon and a squirmy worm. Haven’t got to try it out yet, but with the combination of sinking like a rock and the movement provided from the micro legs, it’s really hard to see you going wrong with this. Reminds me a bit of a micro version of a lake trout tube, and those certainly work very well, particularly in chartreuse, which is why I wanted to tie this fly in chartreuse. Technically, you can for now use this in all competitive fly fishing that I know of. However, with not one natural material on it and the distaste for simple, effective flies, could this be the next fly pattern to be banned? Not sure, but I’d be using it while I could! I really enjoy this color combination, but the possibilities are endless—so put in your favorite colors and give it a try! This one is also a good example of how much weight you can put on a fly. MUST Have For Arctic Char!! (Krokerinn) This is an Icelandic fly pattern known as the Krokerinn (The Hook), a fly pattern that is known to work exceptionally well for Arctic char, created by Gylfi Kristjánsson. While it’s known for Arctic char, I can see this pattern working quite well in my home waters for brook trout or landlocked salmon as a caddis imitation. I would tie it in green to better represent the caddis found in my area; however, black will also work well to stand out and still match the profile.
