#90sbaseball celebrates the vibrant era of 1990s baseball, featuring iconic players, memorable moments, vintage gear, nostalgic highlights, classic stadiums, unforgettable rivalries, and the cultural impact of the sport during that decade.
Despite fielding a talented core that included Pedro Guerro, Steve Sax, Orel Hershiser, Bob Welch, and Fernando Valenzuela, the 1987 Dodgers finished 4th in the NL West with a 73-89 record. The following season the organization signed Kirk Gibson, Don Sutton, and Rick Dempsey to provide veteran leadership. Gibson's presence was immediately felt, with the slugger's hustle and gritty style of play spreading throughout the clubhouse. In August of 1988, Gibson scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch for the walk-off run in a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Expos.   👉 How many of you had the opportunity to see Gibson play? ⚾️⚾️⚾️ #MLB #baseball #baseballlife #baseballlove #baseballislife #baseballseason #baseballgame #baseballcards #baseballhistory #vintagebaseball #homerun #chicagocubs #losangelesdodgers #sandiegopadres #yankees #pittsburghpirates #redsox #sfgiants #dodgers #stlcards #atlantabraves #astros #phillies #nyyankees #braves #mets #80sbaseball #90sbaseball #vinscully #kirkgibson
After enduring heartbreaking defeats in the 1990 and 1991 League Championship Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates were just one out away from reaching the World Series in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS against the Atlanta Braves. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, seldom-used Braves utility man Francisco Cabrera stepped up to face Pirates closer Stan Belinda. On a 2-1 count, Cabrera hit a line drive to Barry Bonds, who was positioned too deep in left field, allowing David Justice to score from third base. Braves third base coach Jimy Williams noticed Bonds was out of position and signaled for Sid Bream to also round third base, despite Bream playing on two injured knees. Bonds tried to throw home, but the ball was offline, allowing Bream to score the go-ahead run while avoiding the tag from Pirates catcher Mike LaValliere. 👉 Are there any Pittsburgh Pirates or Atlanta Braves fans following this page? What are your thoughts on Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS? ⚾️⚾️⚾️ #MLB #baseball #baseballlife #baseballlove #baseballislife #baseballseason #baseballgame #baseballcards #baseballhistory #vintagebaseball #homerun #chicagocubs #losangelesdodgers #sandiegopadres #yankees #pittsburghpirates #redsox #sfgiants #dodgers #stlcards #atlantabraves #astros #phillies #nyyankees #braves #atlantanraves #80sbaseball #90sbaseball #pittsburghpirates #pirates
In September 1993, Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium, becoming the first pitcher for the Bronx Bombers in a decade to achieve this feat. Inspirational stories of success and overcoming adversity are what make baseball so great. Despite being born without a right hand, Abbott won a Gold Medal in the 1988 Olympics and was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft by the California Angels later that year. He spent 10 seasons in the Bigs, finishing third in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 1991 with an 18-11 record. 👉 Where do you rank Abbott’s career among the most inspirational stories in sports? Can you think of other baseball players who have overcome significant adversity? ⚾⚾⚾ #MLB #baseball #baseballlife #baseballlove #baseballislife #baseballseason #baseballgame #baseballdad #universityofmichigan #jimabbott #90sbaseball #homerun #specialolympics #atlantabraves #mets #athletics #chicagocubs #nyyankees #dodgers #sandiegopadres #astros #texasrangers #seattlemariners #yankeestadium #yankees #redsox #laangels #losangelesangels #baseballplayer #baseballswag
Early in what would become an MVP-winning season for Kevin Mitchell, the San Francisco Giants outfielder took a poor angle on a fly ball hit into left field by Ozzie Smith. Unable to reach the ball with his glove, Mitchell quickly raised his other hand and made a bare-handed catch. Mitchell credited his experience playing wiffle ball as a kid for helping him make the play. “You didn’t have gloves in wiffle ball,” Mitchell explained. “You used to just use your hands. So I just stuck my hand up, and it landed smooth. Smooth as butter.” 👉 Join me in wishing the 1986 World Series champion and 1989 National League MVP a Happy 63rd Birthday!
