Audism (not autism) is a form of discrimination directed against deaf people. Although doctors usually mean well, the idea that a deaf person can only grow and thrive if they have access to spoken language is completely audist. This has happened so many times it’s unreal. If my husband wasn’t there with me, I never would have gotten anywhere with any doctors - and even with him there I have BARELY gotten any specialists to care. I have had multiple male doctors who kicked me out of the hospital, told me I was faking/overreacting/just fine, screamed at me, tried gaslighting me and making me question my reality, refusing to do tests or try medications, and so much more. My husband is the reason I can function because he pushed the doctors to help me.
