Adding ✨NW1✨ behind Wally’s name 🏆😭 We completed in our first official Nosework Trial today through NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) Yall I can’t lie, I jumped up and down and cried when we passed the last search today 😭😭 and I got emotional for a few reasons: 1. We’ve been training in this sport for the last YEAR. It’s been a long process! We’ve been ready to do this for a while, but it just took me making the jump to sign us up! 2. There’s A LOT of pressure at National Association of Canine Scent Work trials. Unlinke AKC, in order to receive your title you have to pass four searches (interior, exterior, containers and vehicle) all in the SAME day. If you miss one, then you don’t get your title. I had such a weight on my shoulders, especially for the containers (boxes) since that’s something that he has struggled with the most! 3. We were the only bully breed competing today among almost entirely purebred dogs. It brings me such joy to know that I can advocate for bully breeds through many means, including Dog sports. They are SO capable. 4. Nosework is a TEAM sport, so I put a lot of pressure on myself to have to trust Wally because he consistently shows me he can find odor, but it’s me as the handler who often misinterprets his body language. I’m proud of not just him but myself. But guess what? WE DID IT! In the pouring rain. In a high wind advisory. Ugh I’m just so proud 🥹🥹🥹🥹 ANDDDD out of 34 dogs, we got the 2nd fastest time in the vehicle search! Ugh ok done boasting, gonna go take a well deserved nap! Like this video?! ⚠️ His situation was dire ⚠️💉 🐕 Hachikō arrived at Bergen County Animal Shelter under a different name. A name associated with negativity. Perhaps that's why some people didn't like him. Perhaps it's because he is an American Akita, a breed known for bonding to one person or family and being fiercely loyal. 😢 As a nearly defeated and seemingly dishonored dog with no family to serve, he went from Samurai to Rōnin. 💪 Without a purpose, dogs will spiral downward! This leads to kennel aggression and further prevented him from trusting people. Dogs like Hachikō, Japanese for "Loyal dog," requires time while trust is EARNED. 👉 We decided to put in the work. We took the time and repeatedly socialized him. We taught him to trust and taught his adopters, Jade and Brian how to do the same. ⚠️ As dog professionals, in whatever capacity, we are NOT ALLOWED TO DISLIKE ANY ONE DOG! ⚠️ We can ONLY objectively classify behavior. If you're unable or even worse, unwilling to do so, we suggest you examine other avenues. ❤️ We approach dogs by temperament first; it just so happens the temperament was very in line with breed standard-THIS TIME. 🙏 We owe tremendous thanks to Bob and Meg for placing their faith and trust in our assessment and advocating for Hachikō. 😢 Otto’s owner passed away.😢 The only world he’s ever known was taken from him and he’s terribly afraid and confused. 🐕 He’s a 5 year old lab/pit mix and he’s super afraid. Dogs are often so fearful the may exhibit what’s known as fear aggression. This wasn’t the case with Otto, yesterday. 👉 ”Why didn’t you give him treats, Richie?!” When dogs are in fight or flight the nose shuts down and they won’t eat. Patience is the best tool to use, followed by movement. 🙏 Otto needs out. We will do our best to begin his rehabilitation journey but we need a foster to step up.
