Before the TikTok ban, I’m sharing this compilation. When I was little, I always wanted to play piano but lessons were out of my immigrant parent’s budget. So I turned to harmonium instrument as it was what my Dad played at home, I watched him, and I wanted to learn. If I was a boy, I’m sure he would have been more eager to teach me how to play better, but it’s is an instrument men mostly play in Afghan culture. As a child/teen who dealt with depression and social anxiety, music was my escape. I listened to all types and kinds. I taught myself how to play harmunia and keyboard by ear, especially Ahmad Zahir. I listen to a song, I spend a few hours breaking down the melodies, finding the keys, then putting it together like a puzzle. If I had practiced more, I’m sure I would have been better, but alas, that’s life. We get what we put in, no excuses. The past few years as I’ve juggled other things, I have lost the desire to play music. Sharing the beauty of Afghan culture has been important to me the past two decades, and I am glad TikTok gave me a platform to reach a wider audience since 2020. If the app goes, I wanted to make this video compilation of some of the music, culture and history I have shared with you all. Like the violin player while Titanic was sinking, I leave you all with music….
