While handling my female Mexican Redknee Tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii), she began to sink her large dagger-like fangs into my hand. From an outsider’s perspective, this sort of behavior may look nefarious. But in reality, she’s just using her fangs to gain a better grip on my hand. Many spiders will use their fangs to anchor onto surfaces when their legs don’t have good footing. What’s really interesting is that spiders generally have a good control at holding back their venom from being released while anchoring! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! I was curious in seeing what would happen if I were to randomly grab a wild species of true widow out of its web. After finding a juvenile female Southern Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans), I wasted no time in using my bare hand to grab her out of her web! Despite many thinking that she would bite me, she was incredibly docile, despite me evicting her. As you can see in the video, juveniles of this species are adorned in beautiful patterns that they will later lose in their adult stage. I took her home with me where I set her up inside of an enclosure that would be suitable for her. After being fed several mealworms, her abdomen doubled in size. After keeping her for over a month, she eventually molted (shed) to a healthy adult! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! Dragging its prey into an underwater demise, the Ferocious Water Bug (Abedus herberti) truly lives up to its name! Sensing the vibrations from the struggling American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana), the underwater assailant smoothly latches itself onto the back of the roach. All species of water bugs (Belostomatidae) inject tissue dissolving venom to internally break down their prey’s body. Their prey typically drown to death before the venom takes its full effect. The Ferocious Water Bug immediately begins to probe the roach using its rostrum (beak-like mouthpart) to find a soft spot to pierce and inject its venom! The spot of choice just so happened to be the soft tissue that connects the roach’s head to its thorax, its neck! Like a vampire biting and sucking its victim’s neck, the Ferocious Water Bug sucks out all of the dissolved juices that its venom broke down within the cockroach’s body. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! Many of you may be familiar with these adorable little insects. This is a male and female Eastern Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica). To some, these insects are always a pleasure to see flying around on the warm days of spring and summer. And to others, these insects are a nuisance and an unwanted pest. The females of this species are infamous in chewing holes through wooden structures, such as trees, fences, people’s homes, and many other buildings. Female Eastern Carpenter Bees use their incredibly strong mandibles to chew circular holes through wood to excavate tunnels and chambers within them. Inside each of the chambers, a female will lay just one egg each on top of a ball of nectar and pollen that she has personally collected beforehand. After the tiny larva hatches out from its egg, it will feed on the pollen ball as its only food source before ultimately maturing into an adult. As adults, Eastern Carpenter Bees feed on plant pollen and nectar. Although adult females chew on wood when excavating tunnels, they do not consume the shavings. The males and females of this particular species can be easily distinguished by simply looking at their faces. The males have a prominently yellowish-white face, while the female’s face is entirely black. Male Eastern Carpenter Bees can’t sting, but female Eastern Carpenter Bees have the potential to deliver a venomous sting. Despite the females being able to sting, these particular bees are extremely docile. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! These brightly blue-colored spiders are one of the most sought after tarantulas species in the world! The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental (Poecilotheria metallica) is a critically endangered species in its native range of south-central India due to deforestation. However, many tarantula breeders have successfully bred this species in captivity to the point of there being more species of this tarantula in captivity than in the wild! The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental is an arboreal species, meaning that they live on and inside of trees. The females of this species live an average of about 12 years, while the males only live for about 4 years. The one that I own in the video is a female. Unlike many New World tarantulas, which are tarantulas native to North and South America, the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental doesn’t have the capability to flick urticating hairs. Being an Old World species of tarantula, it instead has potent venom that it uses to subdue its prey with. Tarantulas within this genus, (Poecilotheria), are usually credited with having the most potent venom out of all other tarantulas! Although there has not been a human casualty from the bite of any tarantula species, people who have been envenomated from this particular species have described the venom as being severely painful. Symptoms from their venom include accelerated heart rate, headaches, muscle cramps, and nausea. The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental is an incredibly fast species with lightning-like movements. However, as you can see in the video, they can also display a much slower demeanor. I thoroughly enjoy keeping this species so much!⁣ *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! Large, sturdy, robust, but above all, beautiful! This wasp is one of my personal favorites. I went ahead and took a few stings in my forearm from this female Eastern Cicada Killer (Sphecius speciosus). This may come as a surprise to many, but the venom delivered from this species is on par with most paper wasp stings, in my personal opinion of course. Eastern Cicada Killers specifically use their venom to paralyze cicadas. For this reason, these large wasps have no interest in going after and stinging people. They’re on a mission to only sting cicadas. This is personally why I believe their venom is so weak. It’s only use is for incapacitating cicadas, not for defending themselves. Only by the use of deliberate force will the Eastern Cicada Killer sting you. So to all of those who may be afraid by their intimidating size, they much rather conserve their venom strictly for cicadas only! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! WOULD YOU KEEP HERMIT CRABS? 🐚🦀 Did you know before I became an environmental biologist that I adopted hermit crabs irresponsibly?! Now these animals are one of my key factors in my studies and works in understanding arthropod biology and intelligence. These incredible animals have long lifespans and delicate needs that may not be up to the task for everyone who wants them. Do you think you’d be a good hermit crab keeper? #pets #bugtok #animals #zoology #insects #invertabrates #arthropods #biology #entomology #science #crab #hermitcrab #aquarium #hermitcrabcare
Like a speck of dust, this lacewing larva almost went unnoticed by me, if it wasn’t for it crawling up a wall. These insects are very beneficial in places like gardens where they feed on aphids and other small-bodied insects that may pose a risk to many plants. Some larvae of lacewing species disguise themselves with debris to go undetected from predators and prey. This particular one that I found looked like a piece of lichen! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! You may be more vigilant when you go to eat your next cucumber. 🥒 While chopping up some organic cucumbers, I couldn’t help but notice the discoloration on some of the slices. I assumed part of the cucumber had naturally gone bad. It wasn’t until I noticed several holes that throughout some of the various slices. That’s when I eventually discovered the culprit behind what was happening. The Pickleworm (Diaphania nitidalis) is a common caterpillar pest that is well known for feeding on different varieties of melons, squash, and cucumbers! The caterpillars of this species turn into a moths after pupation. Despite pickleworms being common among cucumbers and other crops, they’re completely safe if you were to unknowingly consume by mistake! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
