These brightly blue-colored spiders are one of the most sought after tarantulas species in the world! The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental (Poecilotheria metallica) is a critically endangered species in its native range of south-central India due to deforestation. However, many tarantula breeders have successfully bred this species in captivity to the point of there being more species of this tarantula in captivity than in the wild! The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental is an arboreal species, meaning that they live on and inside of trees. The females of this species live an average of about 12 years, while the males only live for about 4 years. The one that I own in the video is a female. Unlike many New World tarantulas, which are tarantulas native to North and South America, the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental doesn’t have the capability to flick urticating hairs. Being an Old World species of tarantula, it instead has potent venom that it uses to subdue its prey with. Tarantulas within this genus, (Poecilotheria), are usually credited with having the most potent venom out of all other tarantulas! Although there has not been a human casualty from the bite of any tarantula species, people who have been envenomated from this particular species have described the venom as being severely painful. Symptoms from their venom include accelerated heart rate, headaches, muscle cramps, and nausea. The Gooty Sapphire Ornamental is an incredibly fast species with lightning-like movements. However, as you can see in the video, they can also display a much slower demeanor. I thoroughly enjoy keeping this species so much! *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio!
