Interactions with police officers can be trauma-inducing for Deaf people on many levels, even for Deaf therapists. First, there is the obvious communication barrier, since most police officers don’t know ASL. Second, many times, police officers don’t realize the Deaf person is Deaf right away. This can lead to scary misunderstandings, particularly when the Deaf person’s gestures are misinterpreted as threats. Third, when no interpreter is present, the Deaf person is often at the mercy of the closest hearing person who signs - it could be an unqualified person, a child (Coda), or even someone who is taking advantage and lying to the police and Deaf person while interpreting. Thank you, Sheli and Jerry, for sharing your story and for offering tips on dealing with police officers. #deafawareness #police Est. 2001. Deaf Women Owned. ADHD is diagnosed more often in males than females, but the statistics may not be quite accurate. Many females aren’t diagnosed with ADHD when they should be. ADHD symptoms that females show can look different than those that males show. Males tend to be hyperactive and impulsive, while females often forget things and have trouble paying attention and organizing. Brenda reflects on living with ADHD from childhood and shares the tools she has used to manage ADHD symptoms. Est. 2001. Deaf Women Owned. Over 20 years in business. 35+ years of Experience. A big part of the work we do at Deaf Counseling Center is de-stigmatizing mental health issues and experiences. One that we wish more people understood is postpartum depression (PPD). PPD is a mental health condition that sometimes affects parents after a baby is born. It can create feelings of sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion, all of which combine to make it extremely difficult to function. Research shows that 1 in 7 mothers experience PPD, but it can also affect fathers and adoptive parents. For women, hormonal changes, particularly drops in estrogen and progesterone after giving birth, seem to trigger these symptoms. Thank you, Kelsey, for normalizing and opening up about your experience with PPD. #postpartumdepressionawareness #ppd Est. 2001. Deaf Women Owned. Herbs have been used for hundreds of years to support mental health, helping to reduce stress and improve mood. Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western Herbalism all have different practices for brain health. Chamomile, for example, is well-known for its soothing effects and is often used to calm anxiety. Ashwagandha strengthens the body’s ability to handle stress. Research shows that when herbs are used in the right way, they can promote balance and emotional well-being. To be safe, always consult with your doctor or certified herbalist before using herbs to treat mental health. Thank you, @bouquetofbasil.herbals for sharing your herbal knowledge with us.
