Our home was built in 1899 and it has lived through so many families and so many eras and has so many stories to tell. The last story our attic told was the story of Robert Reed, or “Mike Brady” of the Brady Bunch, renting out the third floor of our home while he studied drama at Northwesternin the 1950s. How do we know that? And how do we know the space hasn’t been touched since Reed lived here? . Well, shortly after we moved in three years ago, one of the previous owners came knocking on the door with his very elderly father and asked if he could come in. He told us that he had been raised in the house and when he was very young, his parents had rented the third floor to Reed while he studied at Northwestern. When they went up to the third floor, they smiled when they saw it had been untouched since that time. . We looked into them (and the story) when they left, and it all checked out. . Now, we are embarking on a full renovation of the third floor for the first time since the 1950s. We have a lot of fun plans for this space, but we are going to be sure to restore as much as we can, retain as much of the character and charm that this space already has (which is a lot!), but modernize it so it can be more useful for our family. . We are starting with the space that Reed used as his bedroom. We are turning it into an office space and the renovation is already underway. . Follow along as we flip this space upside down over the next couple of months, and send to that friend who can’t get enough of home reno content (we all have one!)because this one is going to be one of our best yet… . Which space should we tackle next after the office? . . . . .
