I don’t know who needs to hear this but…. Merry Christmas! To anyone feeling somber this morning, I hope my story brings you a little light. You don’t know people’s stories—would you ever guess mine? The holidays were always tough for my family. Every year around this time, I reflect on what Christmas was like for me as a kid. It was never really a joyful time for us. But this smile you see? It’s a smile of victory—a smile that’s endured through every obstacle I’ve faced. I remember being 13, traveling by train with my baby sister and my mom. We were coming back to Chicago with a bag of frozen leftovers from my Granny’s house. We returned to no hot water, no heat, and bundled up together in one room, reheating those leftovers on a hot plate. That Christmas changed everything. We were taken away from our mother that year. I spent the next two years battling issues like suicide attempts, bulimia, and life in group homes and foster care. But here’s the beauty of it all: my mom is still here. To date, she’s 27 years clean. She’s broken the generational curses, and we’re all living proof that change is possible. I’ve learned you don’t have to repeat the cycle—you can break it. And while this Christmas wasn’t perfect, I’m grateful. My kids have a roof over their heads, hot water, lights, and heat. They may not have everything they want, but they have everything they need. You might not know my full story, but let me leave you with this: my story is still being written, and it’s the story of a survivor. Every obstacle I’ve faced has been a stepping stone to victory.
