I had a wave of grief as I sat with my husband tonight, and it pissed me off and made me ask why? What did I do, what did he do, what did we do to deserve this horrible journey with Early Onset Alzheimer's?! He was struggling to get up.out of his chair and I could sense the frustration...It all seems so unfair for him! I managed to recover, and thought about people more unfortunate than us, and how much good and happiness ess we did have! I thought about how social media is letting Pat make a difference as he always hoped it would, and to create awareness to help.others. I thought about our love and that's why this is so very painful. this was Jan. 1st 2021... utterly unreal not knowing how much worst it would actually get! 3 years almost in Memory Care now and he can't speak and doesn't know me or our child! He can't say I love you, or you're beautiful, or playfully smack my butt or in public! lol He can't take or son to hockey and help coach him or tell everyone how very proud of him he is! Pretty good visit overall, just a couple moments of agitation. Some days/nights are worst than others of course! One of the caregivers at his Memory Care home here said he was much more energized today than the last day or two! I thought he did look pretty good and answered me quite a few times. Lifes hard when my spouse can no longer talk or remember...for years now...Imagine not talking to your best friend about anything and everything even though they're right here in front of you!! UGH! And yes, Pat got his only tattoo with our son Aydens name after diagnosis, thinking it would help keep Ayden top of mind within memory's reach...The disease had other plans...Do you have questions for God when you see Him one day?? He totally tried giving high fives!! Granted there are times when the Alzheimer's brain is a big disconnect but there are plenty of times when it's working hard to do, see, say...all the things! I'm not sure if it's more heartbreaking for me or helpful for me! Everything with this disease is an oxymoron, opposing emotions every step of the way. Maybe Pat feels that way too?! I wish I knew!! I wish he could tell me! One things for sure, as hard as it is to be present with him in this journey, I wouldn't trade this time with him for anything. Almost every visit to see my husband in Memory Care I bring him treats! Ice cream is his favorite, yes it always has been! The 2nd treat I always bring is fruit, unless it's Friday night date night then I like to bring pizza too. π π The MC food is very good, all homemade style meals, always desserts too, but I don't see pizza very often and Pat loves pizza. He also loves chicken wings but I wouldn't bring him those at this stage...My expectations for each visit are a minimum of feeling he's content and generally happy. If he could talk to me and tell me that I'd be in heaven. I am always hopeful he will speak at least a few words when I visit and the hopes that he tells me he loves me and says my name would be miraculous!! None the less, I've become a realist and this disease is a thief. Cherish your family and friends and all the things and all the words!! Love you all and see you live tonight! I think the Memory Care homes Christmas party really buzzed everyone up!! lol A couple of them were in rare form, telling me all kinds of stories, following me around, giving hugs! One fella told me.his wife was probably cheating again, that she's done it before! lol Oh my!! Im sure the ones that can talk get real lonely and just want to share conversations! I didn't know I would get teary tonight! Grief is like that! Anticipatory grief especially! Knowing that "that dreadful day is coming" and having this slow and horrific decline/progression to that day, losing every part of the person that is your loved one except the body itself. Yes we see glimpses of our Pat but this life is far from the life we had and planned and we're looking forward to. We haven't "talked" in years! I'm blessed to have him so close to our home and I can and do come anytime! The love we had will never go away and so that's a win over this damn disease! And we have an amazing child together from our love! Thank you all for being here with us! I am not alone and I am grateful! Much love all!
