It is so very important for parents to see and understand the many changes that occur to the lip, nose and scar during the months and years following their baby’s cleft repair. The lip is often pink and firm for months after the surgery. The scar may also become raised and/or contract, causing shortening of the lip making it appear as if the cleft is recurring. 😳 I try my best to reassure parents during this time and encourage them to apply scar ointment and massage daily. Hi 👋🏼 everyone! Today, I want to discuss the cleft nose. Specifically, the nasal 👃🏼 deformity associated with a unilateral cleft lip as well as the focus of the reconstruction. A typical unilateral cleft nasal deformity involves a deviated septum AND a malpositioned alar base. Both of these anatomic abnormalities are addressed at the time of the primary cleft lip repair 👍🏼. Hi 👋🏼 everyone! I continue to receive a lot of questions about nostril retainers in my cleft lip repairs. So today, I put together a quick video to better explain their PLACEMENT and PURPOSE. I use these nasal stents when I perform more extensive intranasal incisions and/or the alar rim needs extra support during the healing process. The nostril is a circular structure, and you want to avoid any scar contracture during the healing process that may constrict the nostril shape. If this happens, it is a VERY challenging thing to correct in the future.
