🌱 How to Build a DIY Aeroponic System for Plants 👉 Start with a plastic bin made from HDPE. 👉 Use a 2-inch hole saw to cut holes in the lid. Be careful—sometimes the hole saw can kick if the plastic cracks instead of cutting smoothly. 👉 Clean up the edges with a deburring tool and sandpaper, then wash the bins. 👉 Place the bins on the grow rack. 👉 Add airstones inside, run the tubing, and connect them to an air pump that runs 24/7. 👉 Set up the misting device, attaching it to a water pump with a timer to mist the roots with a fertilizer-water mix throughout the day. 🥳 And that's it! This simple DIY aeroponic system has been one of our favorite ways to grow greens indoors with minimal effort. We've had great success with Swiss chard, collards, kale, pak choi, and tatsoi. We actually started building these in 2018, before we launched On The Grow, and they’ve been a go-to ever since. Just keep in mind that they can leak, so be mindful of placement and consider using a rubber floor mat if needed. 🌱 How It Works: DIY Aeroponic System Watering Setup. A lot of people asked, and there are two ways to setup the watering on the DIY Aeroponic System build that we shared. 😊 👉 Option 1 – You can get this pre-made spray manifold on Amazon. It connects to your water pump with tubing and sprays the roots. Its super easy to install and you can find the link for it in our bio. 👉 Option 2 – You can build your own misting device by using irrigation tubing and micro sprinkler heads. This lets you customize your mister setup, but it takes a bit more effort. And sometimes finding the pieces, and putting them together can be challenging. However, it does work really well if you get the right pieces. Both options connect to a water pump, which is plugged into a timer. The timer runs every 30 minutes for 15 minutes a day. 💧💧💧 And that’s how we water our plants! 🥳 If you're concerned about plastics, we encourage you to do your own research and choose what feels right for you. We grow for personal consumption and use materials we’re comfortable with. #verticalgarden #hydroponics #gardening #agriculture #diygarden #urbanfarmer #DIY #containergardening #growyourown #knowyourfarmer #microgreensfarm #DIYgarden #GardeningTips #DIYproject

We live in an urban environment with limited space, and we have an orchard with 8 stone fruit trees (nectarines, peaches, plums, pluots, cherries, etc.). Here are some creative ways we add fruit trees to our small space: 1. Espalier - this strategy allows you to your tree to grow horizontally up against a wall, fence or trellis. 2. Fruit cocktail tree - this type of tree has multiple varieties of fruit grafted onto a single tree. 3. Miniature dwarf tree- these trees grow of maximum of 6-8 feet tall and are perfect to grow in a large pot. What’s on your fruit wish list? . . . #gardentok #orchard #garden #gardener #backyardgarden #gardening #growfood #containergardening #gardeningtips
I recommend checking out Dollar Tree first before any other gardening supply place. You may be surprised with what you find. DEFINITELY get the seeds! 💡 We’ve gotten a lot of questions about our lighting, so today I want to share our lighting setup for our DIY aeroponics system. 🌱 Since we’re growing adult plants, we need more light than we typically recommend for microgreens. 👉For this setup, we’re using three 40-watt LED lights, positioned 10 inches above the plant canopy. As the plants grow taller, that distance will naturally decrease over time. 👉 If you're curious about PAR readings, we measured them for you—you can see the results in the video. 👉 The lights are plugged into a timer, set for 14 hours on and 10 hours off daily. 🥳 There’s nothing fancy about these lights—they’re LED shop lights with a daylight spectrum of around 6500K and a cover over the diodes. 👉 If you're concerned about plastics, we encourage you to do your own research and choose what feels right for you. We grow for personal consumption and use materials we’re comfortable with. #verticalgarden #hydroponics #gardening #agriculture #diygarden #urbanfarmer #DIY #containergardening #growyourown #knowyourfarmer #microgreensfarm #DIYgarden #GardeningTips #Plants #GardenTok
In my almost 30 year gardening life, I learned a lot through trial and error. Here are five things I learned from planting container gardens wrong.🌸

🌸 Choosing the Wrong Container Size - Initially, I used containers that were too small for the plants I wanted to grow. This restricted root growth and limited the plants’ ability to thrive. Particularly in the summer when they would dry out real quick! I learned that larger containers provide more room for roots to spread and access water and nutrients more effectively.

🌸 Inadequate Drainage - One of my early mistakes was not ensuring proper drainage. Without adequate drainage, water would accumulate, leading to root rot and unhealthy plants.

🌸 Poor Soil Choice - way back in the beginning, I didn’t realize there was a difference and used regular garden soil in my containers, thinking it would work just fine. However, garden soil tends to compact in containers, which hinders root growth and water penetration. Switching to a high-quality potting mix made specifically for containers improved plant health significantly.
🌸 Lack of Fertilization - I assumed that the nutrients in the potting mix would be sufficient for the entire growing season. However, container plants need regular feeding because nutrients in the soil get washed out every time you water. Then I started incorporating a balanced, slow-release fertilizer so it is set and forget while keeping flowers happy and healthy through the growing season. And they’ve thrived ever since.
🌸 Not Watering Well - Overwatering and underwatering were common issues I faced. I would either drown the plants or let them dry out completely. I learned to monitor the soil moisture levels regularly and adjust my watering schedule based on the specific needs of each plant. But the real game changer? Setting up drip irrigation set on timers.

👉 If you're growing hydroponically or aeroponically, your plants are getting all nutrients through water intake in the roots. That means we must provide all essential nutrients in a water-soluble form, simply meaning we add and mix the minerals with water 🌱 Fertilizers aren't “bad chemicals”—it’s just plant food! Whether organic or synthetic, plants need the same nutrients. Organic fertilizers have microbes, while synthetic ones (like we're using right now) provide pure, water-soluble minerals (nutrients) for better absorption. 😊 We’re using a 3-part mix from @masterblendfertilizers (link in bio) for our mature leafy greens. It also works great for herbs, edible flowers, peppers, and tomatoes. 🔹 MasterBlend 4-18-38 → Provides phosphorus & potassium for strong roots, flowering, & fruiting + essential micronutrients to prevent deficiencies. 🔹 Calcium Nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂) → Supplies nitrogen for growth & calcium to strengthen cells + prevent blossom end rot. 🔹 Epsom Salt (MgSO₄) → Boosts photosynthesis with magnesium & supports enzymes with sulfur. ☀️ ⚠️ Mix in This Order to Prevent Nutrient Lockout: 1️⃣ Dissolve MasterBlend first. 2️⃣ Stir in Epsom Salt. 3️⃣ Add Calcium Nitrate LAST (mixing it too soon can cause calcium sulfate buildup, which can clog aeroponic misters & hydro lines). ✔ Adjust pH 5.5-6.5 for best absorption! This is just one way to feed plants! Many hydro fertilizers exist, including organic options. The big question? 🤔 Do they work with this system, or will they clog pumps & misters? We’ll be testing more soon! We’ve already tried Ocean Solution (our go-to for microgreens) but didn’t love it for mature leafy greens. You can also check PPM when mixing fertilizers, but we choose to skip it. #verticalgarden #hydroponics #gardening #agriculture #diygarden #urbanfarmer #DIY #containergardening #growyourown #knowyourfarmer #microgreensfarm #DIYgarden #Fertilizer #gardeningtips
