Trimming these closed forms is much easier than the previous style as there isn’t so much back and forth. Since there is knob, you don’t have to trim it in a way where you can lift the lid without a knob which means you simply cut at an angle and trim a gallery in and then clean up the lid a little. Next is glazing, which must be ya’lls favorite as we typically get the most views on those videos. It could be the fun sounds that make it enticing. This is the 2nd form in this month’s project for Twisted Clay Online. Throwing these closed forms with the knob already on the form is a very satisfying thing to do. When I teach this project in the studio, I always find that this one is tricker to throw, but the trimming and finishing is a lot easier. The Twisted Clay Online courses typically have a main and an alternate form to give a variety of skills when pursuing each new project. I know I say this about a lot of the Twisted Clay projects, but I think closed forms is one of my favorite things to teach. It teaches bellies, collaring, a different style foot and of course covers all the foundational pulling techniques we constantly strive to master. Sometimes our pots don’t cooperate with us in terms of being ready for trimming when we are. If you have a studio in your home and can and you can remove the plastic from your pots in anticipation of trimming, this won’t be an issue, but in a class environment frequently, we have to trim during a designated time. A heat gun is an excellent tool to help dry your pot even if you aren’t ready.  You can try drying in the sun or in front of a fan, but that can cause uneven drying. A heat gun on a banding wheel or pottery wheel is going to give you a much more even drying effect which makes trimming much easier. Be sure you don’t geat gun things on plastic and don’t tough the metal tip to plastic as it till melt since heat guns are typically used to strip paint from woodwork.
