How would I handle this? Well, first of all, I definitely would not have opened that door and rewarded the dog after those actions — opening, the door was definitely a reward because that’s exactly what the dog was excited about 💯 If I’m being completely honest, I would have likely grabbed the dog by his collar and immediately put him in the crate while reminding myself to remain calm —and then go look in the mirror to tell myself what an idiot I was for not having the dog on a leash. However, for the REAL, LONG TERM SOLUTION: There would be a preventative and proactive approach to dealing with a dog like this. The guy in the video had a leash in his hand. The dog would’ve already been on the leash! I would also make sure that I was providing the dog with an outlet for their energy and providing a combination of physical and mental stimulation. In addition to that, teaching very clear rules and boundaries, setting up routines and nurturing calmness in the house, unless I am the one initiating and provoking play. Lastly, I would make sure a dog like that who I am teaching how to live in my house and to be calm would have a leash on them all the time while I am teaching them how to act and behave in the house —so that I can physically guide and handle them as needed. As a general rule, I don’t allow dogs to walk all over me, literally speaking — stepping, climbing and walking on me (especially with larger breeds) is unacceptable to me. Responding in the heat of the moment out of anger, frustration and retaliation (yelling, screaming, hitting) would be understandable given the situation, but not at all recommended or appropriate because it wouldn’t help the dog learn anything apart from becoming defensive, aggressive, or fearful. We have to think beyond our emotions when it comes to dogs. 💯 If you have a dog that’s out of control like this —Check out my Pack Leadership Course — I break down how to deal with dogs just like this and teach you how to be a True Leader 🙌🏽 💪🏽😎
