The 15 Day Dexcom G7 is almost here, and Dexcom revealed a lot of information about timing and pricing is going to be. They predict that it will get FDA approval “shortly”, but that they don’t intend to launch the product until the second half of 2025. While that delay sounds inconvenient, I think it’s for a really good cause. It’s best to think of the 15 Day Dexcom G7 as a totally new product, with a new SKU. (Almost like a Dexcom G7 Plus, if you will). That means it will need a new prescription, insurances will take time to cover it, and automated insulin delivery pumps that sync with the Dexcom G7 won’t automatically integrate with the 15 Day Dexcom G7. Therefore, Dexcom plans to hold the launch until the second half of 2025, which should give time for most (if not all) of their pump partners to make the minor adjustments necessary to integrate with the 15 day Dexcom G7. It also gives some time for insurers to update their formularies. Now when it comes to price, in a previous investor call, Dexcom stated that the manufacturing costs per sensor are essentially the same as with the 15 day product. Hopefully this is just a blip and doesn’t lead to significant supply interruptions, but I’m hearing from multiple reliable sources and channels from patients to pharmacies and distributors that there are some Supply Chain issues with the Dexcom G7. Dexcom has thus far not been forthcoming with the issue other than a very confusing support page that seemingly denies any issues. Since there is no official information, I can only go by what I’ve been told, which is that the supply issues may last as short as a week or two, to as long as 6-8 weeks. If you run into supply issues, here are some suggestions: 1. Try contacting Dexcom support via phone or chat to express frustration, as users have reported that they have been sent a sensor to help bridge the gap. 2. Try calling other pharmacies or distributors that service your area to help find some place that does have it in stock. 3. Consider downgrading to the Dexcom G6. 4. Consider switching to an alternative CGM, like the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus, Freestyle Libre 3 Plus, or Eversense 365. Some notes about the Eversense 365. This is not yet compatible with any pumps, but it is a 1 year implanted sensor with an external transmitter that can be removed and reapplied at any time. It requires 1 finger stick calibration a week. It has virtually no compression lows and has a gentle adhesive for users with sensitive skin. As it is a year-long sensor, it also doesn’t have the first day jitters of other sensors. Some notes about the Libre 2+/3+. Pen users should go to the 3+ as it is better in every way and much smaller than the 2+. Pump users have to follow what their pump is compatible with. The Tandem X2 is compatible with the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus, but the Mobi is not yet compatible. The Omnipod 5 is compatible with the Libre 2 Plus, but keep in mind it requires a different type of pod that is specifically made for the Libre 2 Plus. The iLet is compatible with the Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus. Dexcom confirmed and provided more details about the G7 shortage on a recent investor call. They reported that inventory has been lower due to losing a shipment that was mishandled by one of their shipping partners. In addition, there was lower production yield due to “new build configurations.” They are “managing channel inventory tightly for the next few weeks”, but they anticipate that inventory levels will be “back to normal by the end of the first quarter.” To be clear, the good news is that the shortage should not be severe. I think most people with proper awareness and planning will be able to continue using G7 without interruption, but it’s important to know what’s going on so people can come up with contingency plans. If your pharmacy is backordered, here are some suggestions: 1. Try contacting Dexcom support via phone or chat to express frustration, as users have reported that they have been sent a sensor to help bridge the gap. 2. Try calling other pharmacies or distributors that service your area to help find some place that does have it in stock. You do not need your prescriber to send a new prescription. Pharmacies within the same chain can usually access prescriptions from a different store if you tell them. If you need to transfer it to a different chain, you can ask the legacy pharmacy to send your prescription to the new pharmacy, and they are legally required to honor your request. 3. Consider switching to the Dexcom G6. 4.
