You don’t have to drive to get over your fear of driving—just like you don’t have to die to get over your fear of dying. You also don’t need to: * Get sick to have freedom from health anxiety * Throw up to get over your fear of throw up * Fly across the world to get over your fear of flying. We’re often told that facing our fears head-on is the only way to conquer them. But for some, that approach can make things worse—not better. I know this firsthand. After taking a year-long break from driving on the freeway after having panic attack after panic attack, I forced myself to get back on. I white-knuckled through highways, bridges, and even a 7-hour road trip to San Francisco.  I was using every technique I could think of—singing, tapping, sour candy, you name it. And while I got through it, that 14-hour round trip felt like it took years off my life. What actually allowed me to drive with ease and joy again: I had insights about anxiety, panic, and my innate resilience—and those insights came outside of driving. Once I understood how anxiety works (and how sturdy and designed to return to balance humans are), the fear stopped controlling me—whether I was behind the wheel or not. You don’t need to force yourself into terrifying situations to have a different experience—you’re already capable of peace and ease when you stop taking your anxious thoughts so seriously.
